That evening they met at a restaurant that was a particular favorite of their father’s when he was in town on business; a place he never failed to get a reservation. When Nathan arrived, he found his father and sister already seated. He ordered a drink and joined them in reviewing the menu. When they were ready, a waiter appeared as if by magic and took their orders, disappearing just as swiftly.

“So, we’re all set for tomorrow?” Their father, already halfway through a whiskey, got straight to the point.

“I think so, Dad,” Sam said. “Like Nathan I hate the idea of letting them off this easy, but given Grandfather’s passing and the work that has gone into getting everything consolidated into the new headquarters, I don’t think a scandal would send the right message. I think we’ll have to find another way to deal with them.”

Nathan nodded in agreement. A scandal would do them no good.

“And you, Nathan?”

“Yes, I agree with Sam. I think it’ll be best for everyone at the company. No long-drawn-out court case. They’ll be out of our hair and while people will wonder at the suddenness of it, the rumors will die down eventually. And the chief executives of each business will be onside to help with things. It’s a wake-up call for them to work more closely together to ensure this doesn’t happen again. They get a free pass on this one—providing they learn from it.”

Their father nodded and smiled before changing the subject. “So apart from the obvious, how are you finding things here?”

Nathan paused for a moment, considering his discovery of the manor house and some of the unusual encounters he’d had of late. He quickly turned things over in his head and decided that maybe it was a good idea to give everything but work and day-to-day life a pass. It wasn’t a conversation he was ready to have with his father, or Sam for that matter. As he considered things, though, it did remind him that he hadn’t contacted the lawyer about the manor house. With so many things going on, he’d forgotten to call.

“It’s good. The apartment is beautiful. Regent’s Park is nearby so I go out for a jog when I get home from work. I’ve made some trips out of town to see the countryside. At work I’ve been spending a lot of time with people around the business. I’ve learned a lot about how things operate and even have some ideas about how to increase efficiency and save some costs. Once we get through this week, I’ll put those together and send them across to you.”

“That sounds good. And before I forget, your mother sends her love. I meant to tell you earlier. She appreciates your texts and calls. She said not to be surprised if she shows up on your doorstep.”

They laughed and, as their dinner arrived, turned their attention to eating and making small talk. It turned out that their brother’s wife, Emily, was due any day now.
