Chapter Eleven

Simon

Two-for-oh. I didn’t usually count orgasms, but something about Nina was bringing all kinds of interesting quirks out of me. Like the fact I’d dismiss a concern about fans finding me at a popular tourist site if it meant spending time at a destination she’d planned on. Or how I’d lose track of my thoughts just at the sight of her smile. And how I was constantly trying to drum up a witty comeback to keep up with our growing list of inside jokes.

How the hell have I only known her for three days? Our seamless connection should have been years-old.

“I’m telling you, north is that way.”

“Based on what criteria?” I challenged as we trekked through the forest. It hadn’t seemed like a forest when I’d thought to steal a moment out here. Just some trees. Shade. Fewer observers. Now, with this sudden deluge blinding us, it was a freaking labyrinth of too much greenery.

“My gut.”

“No, I heard it growling again. That’s hunger.”

She slapped my arm. “Ha ha.”

“Unless you swallowed a compass...”

“No. That’s the calendar temple.” Eyes squinted, hair plastered to her face, she winced and pointed. “Right?”

I turned to gauge what she was aiming at. A solid form just above the swaying tree canopy. It didn’t move. It had to be the stones. “Oh, yeaaaah. Good eye.”

“Well, I am hungry.”

“I know. You said that five minutes ago.”

“Which means we have about fifteen minutes until that turns into hangry with a capital H.”

“Then it’ll go hand in hand with my mofangry.” I slipped my hand to hers.

“That’s not a word!”

She walked ahead, leading me in the direction of the temple.

“Doesn’t stop you from making them up.”

“Then what’s it supposed to mean?”

“Motherfucking hangry.”

Her laughter tripped me into that absentminded ease of mind again. Something light, freeing, but comfortable, too. Happiness. That was what it was. Nina made me happy, and I revisited the doubts I’d realized earlier.

There’s no way this is going to stay simple.

“So, for future reference,” she said conversationally like it was perfectly normal to stroll through a storm that had gotten us turned the wrong way and missing our van, “when I say I’m going to close my eyes, do not take that at face value.”

I grinned. “Hey, I ended up napping, too.”

“No. You didn’t just ‘end up’ napping. Two hours ago, mister, you said there was no way you were showing your dick with that many people around.”

Because the last thing I need to surface is a dick pic. I winced, recalling what happened to my bud, Chris. That was Mr. Chris Accidental-Dick-Pics-Gone-Viral Evans. Such a nice guy.

Through the haze of kissing Nina, I’d already caught people chattering at the temple, like they could have made me in this bearded attempt of a disguise. Therefore, I had no guarantee no one followed me from a distance. All the more reason why I’d shielded Nina with my body to protect her from wandering eyes.

Nina continued. “So when my post-orgasmic fantasy of getting you off in this Yucatan wilderness was shot down, I suggested we sit down under the shelter of a tree and catch our breath.
