Chapter 9

Roswynd took deep breaths on her walk to her sister's room, then quickly stopped and tested a door to an empty, dark guestroom. She slipped into it before a guard noticed her, closed the door, and pressed her back against it. A few tears slipped free, but she covered her face and held back the sobs. Her mind rehashed the earlier argument with her wife.

Again, Tharon had manhandled her, forcing her onto the table and imposing herself on Roswynd. She hated how her body responded to the physical excitement of it even when they were heading for an argument. The entire time she had gripped Tharon's biceps, needing any kind of physical contact similar to when they were pups in a fight. Tharon's brief lecture about getting along replayed in her head.

Tharon was right, again. They needed to get along on some level rather than butt heads, especially when they were in Wulfbite in a month. Tharon spoke of the White Sommer citizens, but behind that issue was Saxon. Roswynd was used to standing her ground against Saxon, but he was the king now and far stronger than she was. She hated to admit that it was Tharon's presence that kept him at bay. She wanted to handle Saxon on her own, yet she was foolish to keep jabbing Tharon, who would be her protector in Wulfbite.

However, Roswynd was failing to control her cold attitude toward Tharon after what happened on Golden Wheat Road. Tharon had protected her from the thieves and cared for her after they returned to Chesford Manor. In the morning, when Roswynd had a clearer mind, she had come to grips with the ugly truth about Tharon. Roswynd's best friend was gone.

Many years ago Roswynd had "buried" her best friend after Tharon broke their friendship pact. At the time, she had accepted that she may never see Tharon again to heal their friendship, their promises, and their hearts. Having been suddenly forced to marry had set Roswynd on a course to see if there was anything left of her best friend inside the tall, dark, and menacing Alpha. The incident on Golden Wheat Road was a slap to her face.

Her Tharon was gone.

Now Roswynd was faced with having to bury her best friend all over again. Her chest constricted, heavy with the consuming rage inside her. She wanted to hate Tharon for doing this to her. She hated herself for ever having hope that her best friend lived inside that brute. To make it worse, Tharon was handsome, strong, and all Alpha, stirring Roswynd's Omega in response.

With a growl, Roswynd crumpled to the floor and furiously wiped the tears, but they kept coming one after another. "I hate you for this," she whispered to no one. "I hate that you broke our first vows. I hate that you gave us new ones. And I hate that you took my best friend from me." She fisted her hands, wishing she could pound them into Tharon right now.
