Alan

The pain was much worse than he was letting on. He hid his agony for multiple reasons. First was the detective who had found him. Alan didn’t want the man to think he would be easy to take in, in case he tried. Or that Alan couldn’t take off again and just run.

Second, he didn’t want to freak Danielle out. The two had been through a lot together and he knew how she’d react if he allowed her to understand how much pain he was in. She would put up a strong front and do what needed to be done, but it would hit her hard to see him like that.

Alan and the shivering detective approached the open rear ramp to board the small craft.

The ship had enough room for a narrow storage bay followed by four seats, including the pilot’s.

Danielle turned her neck from the pilot’s seat to see them board. Her eyes scanned Alan, taking in the amount of blood on his face, hoodie, and jeans.

Next, she moved to look at the detective.

She didn’t say a word, but Alan knew what those brown eyes behind her glasses were doing. She was already measuring the detective to bring him into the angelic order.

“Buckle up; let’s go,” Danielle said, turning to scan the instrument panel in front of her. “The longer we’re touched down, the longer we risk someone seeing us.”

Alan and the detective took the two rear seats behind Danielle.

“Hey, I’m not your chauffeur. Someone sit up front with me,” Danielle instructed. Her fingers tapped the holographic display in front of her as she enabled the cloaking device again and lifted the craft into the air. “This isn’t Driving Miss Daisy.”

“Good luck.” Alan extended a hand toward the detective.

The shivering man decided not to argue and obeyed, taking the seat next to Danielle.

“Danielle Turner,” Danielle said to him. “Alan, you’re not going to introduce your friend?”

“Friend’s a strong word and I don’t know his name,” Alan confessed.

Danielle looked sideways at the detective. “He doesn’t even know your name and you agreed to get on our ship?”

“Not much of a choice,” the detective said with a shrug that ended in a shiver. “I’m John Li.”

“And your lips are turning blue, John Li,” Danielle said as she tapped a few more buttons on her colorful control panel. “Here, I’m going to put your seat warmers on.”

“This, this plane has seat warmers?” Alan asked in awe. “Hey, I’m cold too.”

A second later, Alan felt his seat warm as well.

“What happened?” Danielle asked Alan. “I want everything. All the details, including how right I’ve been about backup and recruiting Nephilim.”

“Dominic Drencher’s back,” Alan said.

Danielle placed the craft on auto pilot before turning around in her seat. “Are you sure? I thought he was dead.”

“So did I,” Alan agreed. “I should have known. Without a body, anything is possible. He’s back with another Nephilim with pyro abilities named Jessica and the power of the Draugr behind him. Who knows how many Nephilim and regular human gang members he’s recruited.
