Kat has no idea how long it takes for her train to arrive. As she waits, her mind sifts the hours she and Anna have spent together through the filter of this new information.

She doesn’t yet know where it leaves her.

When her train arrives a few hours later, she and Olive climb on it like old pros. They get their luggage sorted and their bed ready, and they both fall into an exhausted slumber the moment it leaves the station.

ANNA IS WAITING on the platform in Stockholm as promised. She has washed her hair and put on a clean willow-green linen shirt that shows the shape of her beautiful neck, the rise of her breasts, and the line of her back. She holds a bunch of wildflowers in her hand.

Olive runs in joyful circles around Anna’s legs. She scratches the top of the dog’s head.

Kat watches them, and it seems that this beautiful woman and her dog are the only still forms in the whole swirling station.

Anna stands up, turns to look for Kat. When she finds her, her mouth forms the words, “I love you.”

Kat takes in those words, and they settle inside her like falling rain. Time softens, it lengthens, and it curls back around. And then she nods as if to say, Yes, I think you do.

Kat steps onto the platform, and she and Anna kiss with such sweet intensity that Kat feels it in her bone marrow, especially in her broken bones. It is as if the feeling pours out of those fissures and straight into her aching heart.

For this one single moment, she would do it all again, even the terrible parts: the cold, the fear, the grief, the brushes with mortality, and even the risk of losing the love she has only just found.
