Chapter Fifteen

I finished the houses in my direction, then met back up with Julio and told him what I’d found out.

“Lot of folks not home,” he said. “Did find one guy, Peter Sheehan, who said that he saw a car coming out of Eli’s driveway after dark on Wednesday. He was driving home when the car started to pull out in front of him. He said the car suddenly stopped and backed up. The man thought it was odd that the car hesitated and then backed a lot farther away from the road than necessary to wait for him to pass. Sheehan saw it pull out just as he reached his house.”

“Did he get a look at the car or the driver?”

“No, just saw the headlights. He was pretty sure that it was a car and not a truck.”

“So not Eli’s truck.”

We grabbed barbeque sandwiches to go from Deep Pit and took them back to the office. I shared the autopsy results with Julio while we ate.

“What do you think?” I asked him.

“He was killed by someone he knew,” Julio said with certainty.

“Interesting. What makes you think that?” I had my own ideas, but I wanted to know what Julio was thinking.

“They were behind him on the landing. I think they were in his home before the attack. He walked out with the person following behind him. I also believe the murder was premeditated,” Julio continued. “There are only four steps down to the stone path. You push someone down just four stairs, there’s no way you can be sure it’s going to kill them. But this killer was ready. Shoved Waters and then moved down the stairs and slammed his head down on the pavers to make sure he was dead.”

“I agree. Eli certainly didn’t feel threatened if he turned his back to walk down the stairs with the person behind him. But, by all accounts, Eli was a nice guy, if a little bit of a polite lecher. A guy like that might trust someone other people wouldn’t.”

“Like this Gene guy the woman was talking about?” Julio asked.

“Exactly who I was thinking of. Though why Gene would care since he doesn’t appear to want to hang around and take care of his kids, I don’t know.”

“Some guys are like that. They won’t step up, but they don’t want other guys hanging out with a woman they consider theirs.”

“You’re right. We’ll just have to hunt the guy down and see if he has an alibi.”

“I’ll find him,” Julio said, glancing at his watch. “I need to get back to my day job.”

He called dispatch and told them he was in service. Less than a minute later, his radio crackled and dispatch gave him an address on the west side of the county where a woman had reported a burglary.

“Have fun,” I said. “I’ll text you Nadine’s information and what she gave me for Gene’s last known address.”

Julio nodded, picking up his trash and heading for the door.

I spent some time working on reports before my phone rang.
