ROSE

First thing in the morning, I eagerly reach for my phone.

Nathan: I would say that the floors look gorgeous, but you have redefined what gorgeous means to me. So I'll just say that the floors look great.

Attached is a stunning photo of sunlight hitting the hardwood planks of the dining room.

Me: Wow – thank you so much!

Nathan: Can I call you later?

Me: I'm going to be super busy today finalizing shopping lists, so can we make it tonight? Have an incredible day.

Nathan: Of course I'll have an incredible day. I'll be thinking about you. XOXO.

I send a heart emoji, then turn off the phone so I'm not tempted to call him.

It's wild how connected I feel to Nathan. Maybe things are happening too fast, but it seems to have worked out for Lily.

I sit up and see her thumbs flying over her phone. "And how is Dean this morning?" I ask.

She grins. "Amazing."

Zinnia rolls over. "Man, I was positive I'd have the room to myself last night."

"Nathan got up at four to finish the floors."

"Dean had a super early job too," Lily says. "We can't just take over their lives, you know."

Zinnia props her chin up with her hand, staring out the window. "The entire apartment to myself as soon as you two move in with your guys. Sounds pretty sweet."

A pillow bonks her on the head as Lily dissolves into a fit of giggles, receiving a stabby glare in return before she laughs as well.

My phone rings on the way to brunch. Holding up a finger to stop my sisters, I wave for them to follow me off the sidewalk into the parking lot of the hardware store.

"Hi, Dad." My sisters gather around as I put the phone on speaker. "Lily and Zin are here with me."

"Good morning, girls."

"How's London?" Lily asks.

"Quite good, thank you. Things are shaping up nicely. The relocation service has completely decorated the house for me."

"That's great," I say. "We'll expect a few pictures at some point."

"Of course. But it made me concerned that you girls are doing all of this on your own."

"Not totally on our own," I say quickly. Dad always prefers that we have adult supervision, even though we're grown women. He's always waffled back and forth between telling us that we're adults and should take responsibility for our own lives, and treating us like babies. I understand that it comes from a place of needing to control things so chaos doesn't take hold. But still.

"Aunt Doug set us up with a contractor who coordinated the workmen for the renovations. And she's helped us select some of the furniture."

"Everything is plain and classic," Lily chimes in. "Nice and sturdy, too."

"I'll feel better if Douglas goes through everything before you order things," he says. There's a sharpness to his voice that says it's not a request.

I already know that Aunt Doug doesn't care how we decorate her apartment, and what she has seen so far she has been completely on board with. Still, I know it's better to make him feel comfortable.
