Howard Damon felt a slight twinge of familiarity at the sound of the man’s voice.

Where have I heard that voice before?

Still walking along the path, Howard glanced in that behind. Walking away from him was the man who had just bumped him. He was utterly nondescript, except that he was wearing a jacket that looked slightly too heavy for this late summer weather, and the brim of his hat was unusually broad. He’d glimpsed the man’s face for just a moment, but now he couldn’t remember it at all.

For a second, Howard was struck by the feeling that he'd been bumped and apologized to by this very man once before just yesterday—and maybe one other time before that.

Ridiculous.

Just a flash of déjá vu.

Howard was prone to such flashes in the morning before he had his first cup of coffee, which would be the first thing he’d do when he got to the restaurant where he worked as a lunchtime bartender and prepared to set things up for the day.

In a little while, he’d have forgotten this ever happened.
