For Susie

Her surprise deepened.

What an odd way to leave a gift.

And who could possibly have left it?

She could be sure of one person who hadn’t left it, and that was her estranged husband. Shane hadn’t spoken with her since he’d moved out of the house and into a Richmond hotel three weeks ago. He was angry and bitter and hurt, and she might as well not exist as far as he was concerned.

Of course, she had to admit, she couldn't exactly blame him, considering how she'd treated him during their last months together.

But who else could it be?

Surely not her son, Wesley, who lived in Texas, or her daughter, Dawn, who now had a husband and kids of her own in upstate New York.

One of the neighbors, maybe?

Her neighbors in this wooded area were certainly friendly with her, especially Allison and Wade, who paid her frequent visits and whom she visited in return.

But why a cap?

To the best of her knowledge, Allison wasn’t a knitter, and she was pretty sure that Wade wasn’t either. But this cap appeared to be made by hand. She held it up toward the light spilling off from the deck and saw that the yarn seemed to be very nearly her exact hair color.

Dannon, maybe?

She shuddered a little at the possibility that her one-time lover, the man who had probably destroyed her marriage, was trying to charm his way back into her life again. And Dannon does have access to yarn.

Susan's heart sank. She really didn't want to have to confront him about this. Or about anything else, for that matter.

But no, it can’t be from him.

Although he had a deceptively charming way about him, it wasn’t exactly Dannon’s style to leave a gift this way. He was always direct and even a bit ceremonial about it. He would want to be recognized as the giver of any gift.

Well, it’s nice, whoever it’s from.

She pulled the cap onto her head to try it on. It fits snuggly and comfortably. It was a bit too warm for this time of year, but it would come in handy during the coming fall. And she figured whoever had left it for her would let her know sooner or later.

As she turned and took a step or two back toward the house, she heard an ominous rustling sound from straight above her. She paused and looked up into the leafy branches of the towering oak tree.

She glimpsed an oddly-shaped shadow among those branches. But before she could focus her eyes for a better view, the shape came sailing down toward her. She only recognized it as a human being just before it knocked her face-first onto the gravelly path.

Terror overwhelmed her as a weight crashed onto her back. She fleetingly grasped the horrible truth—that someone had been
