CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“There’s nothing we can do,” Callaway said, shaking his head in frustration. “Our hands are tied.”

Cole heard her partner, but she did not answer him. She was staring through the window set in the Coldbrook Police Department’s interview room door, watching as Ed Gulley and his lawyer leaned their heads close to one another and murmured. They looked like a pair of school boys figuring out a story to get themselves out of a bind.

She understood why Callaway was upset. Too often, the appearance of a lawyer could cause an interview to grind to a standstill, making it impossible to learn anything from the suspect that could be even remotely damning—which often meant they learned hardly anything at all. And since they had no hard evidence with which to convict Gulley, there was a very real chance he would be out of police custody by the end of the day, free to plot the murder of his next victim.

Cole couldn’t let that happen. The question was, how could she prevent it?

“We can’t just give up,” she said, taking a deep breath as she tried to calm her nerves.

“No,” Callaway agreed, “but without physical evidence, it’ll be tough to pin anything on this guy. He’s had plenty of run-ins with the law, sure, but nothing amounting to homicide. Racist comments don’t make him a murderer.”

“Then we’ll have to get him to say something more incriminating, something that will reveal he can back up his rhetoric with violence.”

Callaway grunted. “Good luck getting past his lawyer.”

Deciding they had given Gulley and his lawyer long enough for their private conference, Cole left the room and walked a few steps down the hallway before entering the interview room. The two men stopped talking and turned toward Cole. Gulley’s eyes narrowed, while the lawyer looked her up and down with an unsettling frankness, apparently unimpressed by what he was seeing.

The lawyer rose, straightening his suit jacket as he did so. He extended his hand, smiling with a warmth that surprised Cole.

“Justin Maloney,” he said.

“Agent Cole,” she answered. “This is Agent Callaway. We’re with—”

“Oh, I know who you are,” Maloney interrupted, still smiling. “I know all about you both.” His smile froze and his words hung in the air, circling above them like buzzards.

“Then you have us at a disadvantage,” Cole said, trying to maintain an attitude of polite civility.

“That’s not the only way in which you’re at a disadvantage.”

“Pardon?”

His smile fell, snatched away like a cloth ripped from a table. “Let’s cut the crap, shall we? We all know you have nothing on my client. You’re just fishing, but in case you haven’t noticed, this isn’t the Rio Grande. You’re not going to get any bites.”

It took Cole a few moments to absorb this verbal barrage. She had dealt with plenty of lawyers before, however, and she knew how deft and sophisticated they could be.

“We haven’t even told him why he’s here,” she said. “All I did was say we had a few questions for him, and he immediately called you.
