CHAPTER FIFTEEN

His pulse was racing, and his heart was hammering in his chest. There was also a slight headache coming on, something he was beginning to associate with the sudden surge of adrenaline that rocketed through him after a kill. He'd never done any hard drugs and had only been drunk twice in his life, but he imagined the rush was akin to being high. The best feeling he could compare it to was when his folks used to take him to the county fairs that came through in the fall when he'd get off of the tilt-a-whirl with that lighter-than-air feeling that was soaked in energy, adrenaline, and fear.

Another reason he thought it might be similar to doing drugs was because it was addictive. Only three hours had passed since he'd killed Lauren Higdon, and he already wanted to strike again. If he didn't, he knew the adrenaline would go away, and he would crash hard. But he wondered what it might feel like to hit again so soon after taking another life.

The good news was that he knew where to look. This close to a college, there was always some group or another wanting to have their message heard. For him, all he had to do was go to Facebook and look at one of the dozen or so social and activist groups he’d joined. To the organizers and those interested in their causes, it was a sounding board and schedule. For him, it was almost like a menu.

There were just too many of them. It was too tempting, too much to resist. And knowing where they were at all times…that just made it easier.

When he stepped out of the shower three hours after taking Lauren Higdon’s life, the adrenaline rush was still there, buzzing in his veins like electricity. He’d gotten some of her blood on his jeans, so he’d already shoved them into a garbage back which he planned to throw out in the dumpster behind his apartment building.

Fresh out of the shower, he walked through his apartment to his small computer desk in the living room. He was completely naked with the windows open. Dusk had fallen, and night was on the way. Surely there was an event somewhere in the city tonight, maybe near the college or downtown. He'd been to plenty of these events at night and found them almost laughable. For some reason, night bought out the real interests in people. He'd seen so many men attend these events at night—usually at small bars or diners, sometimes even at parks with live music—with the sole purpose of trying to get laid. And the funny thing was, it worked sometimes. He'd not really tried in the past, but…well, maybe things wud change tonight.

Not that sex was exactly what he was looking for.

It took him all of five minutes to find a local event. It was being heralded as a "meeting of the minds over wine and debate" and was sponsored by an organization
