Sweet DeceitsThis must be a mistake. Someone must be framing her.

I search the room for the culprit. Miss Madden is smiling, though her brow is furrowed.

There’s no way this sweet woman, who reminds me of my mom, who accepted me without questions asked, could have done such a horrible thing. Only monsters do things like that.

“You weren’t supposed to see that.” Miss Madden strides past me with an apologetic grin. She walks to the little boy, fiddles with the rope, and cuts him loose. The body plummets to the floor headfirst like a broken marionette. There’s a sickening crack as the head collides with the concrete. My stomach lurches.

Don’t throw up. Don’t throw up. Don’t scream. Don’t scream.

Miss Madden drags the body farther into the garage by its feet. “I meant to tidy up before dinner but I just got so excited with the preparations that I forgot.”

I’m numb. It’s like she’s talking about cleaning a messy living room and not disposing of bodies. How can she be so casual? Has she done this before? The horrid thought chills me. The sweet image I had of her threatens to shatter.

“I’d ask you to give me a hand but I prefer to take all the credit, if you don’t mind.” She cuts Mrs. Kathy Gibbins-Lopez‘s rope and her body slinks to the floor. “It brings me more of their favor if I’m doing it all by myself.”

I have no idea what she’s talking about. My mind is blank except for the repeated mantra sing-songing like church bells.

“I meant it as a surprise for your friend.”

Something clicks, and I look at Miss Madden in the eyes. She’s grinning at me.

My mouth is dry when I croak. “What?”

She scoffs. “I’m not stupid, Miss Walker. These…” she points to the buckets of blood. “… are for your friend. As you can see, I got quite lucky today. I’m certain she’ll appreciate it.”

Horrified, I stare at her smiling face. How long has she known?

“Oh come on. There’s no need to act innocent. I’m aware your friend is a creature of darkness.”

“How?”

“Her absence during the day, your unwillingness to discuss your affairs, and not to mention, the dried blood and other stuff on your sweater this morning. I also caught the faint scent of blood when I hugged you earlier.” She chuckles, and gives me a pitiful look as if I’m a complete novice. “She’s not the only vampire I’ve seen or met.”

She slides the edge of her dress up to reveal a black vertical line, a thin crescent moon and a circle tattooed on her chest.

“I’m curious to know where yours is.” She caresses her tattoo like a treasure.

Why does she think I have a tattoo like hers? My brain is taking a while to process the information, but when it kicks in my eyes widen and my dulled senses jump into full alert.

Miss Madden is a Sangue. The bunch who’d do anything to become a vampire, even murder people.

Why does she think I’m like her? Because I came with Sophie? Do vampires let Sangues accompany them? No, that can’t be it.
