Chapter 22

Zuri led me on a dash through several streets before we slowed down. “I’m terribly sorry that my family made a mess of our meal together.”

“It’s fine.” I waved the issue off. “If anything, it was amusing. So those are your half-brothers?”

“They are spoiled brats,” Zuri sighed. “They are both still in The Enclave. The older one could probably do his adept spell and join the military, but he hasn’t. I think he’s a coward and doesn’t want to join the war. My father believes that he is just waiting on his brother because the two of them are that close.”

“Idiots,” I muttered. “They ruined a perfectly good sandwich over that? Also what was the ‘having not reported in’ about?”

“I haven’t gone to the Trevis Estate here in the capital to check in with the leaders of my house. That would just get back to my grandfather who would apply more pressure to me. Rather, I’ve ignored them to send a message to him that I don’t agree with his tactics.” Zuri pursed her lips.

She was cute when she was pouting.

“Makes sense,” I agreed with her. “So then they whipped up your brothers to…? Because that was a shit way to get you to come back.”

Zuri shrugged. “Mostly a message, I think. I will ignore it.”

“Right. So, where’s this park we can play Keeps and Mages at?” I asked, moving past the whole ordeal.

“This way.” Zuri pulled me down a different street. “I am very sorry about them.”

“Forget about it. Can you imagine how chaotic my siblings would be if I had any? Also, the sandwich slap to the face was perfect.” I closed my eyes to savor the memory again. “Wish I had thought of a sandwich slap, though I’m probably not fast enough to pull it off quite so impressively. I’m a little jealous of the physical speed and strength anchors have.”

“Why? You have magic, and this strength is literally your power flowing through me. Don’t think of it as my speed—it is yours.”

“You say things like that enough and my ego is going to become insufferable,” I laughed.

“Well then.” Zuri clung to my arm. “Why don’t you give me more of your strength. I think I am running low.”

I leaned into her and kissed her waiting lips. For a long moment, I just let our lips play before opening up my soul and pouring my magic into her. While I was touching her, I took a peek at her soul.

She was happy in the present, with the kiss and the date. But she was annoyed, bordering on furious with her brothers and the rest of House Trevis. She was worried that they would upset me and deeper down ruin this for her.

I broke the kiss, and her eyes fluttered open.

“You cheated.” She frowned.

“Huh? What?” I scratched my face and looked around. “What would be the point of having a cheat if I didn’t use it?”

“I have nothing to hide.” Zuri smiled. “If cheating makes you more comfortable, cheat away.
