“Oh, yeah,” Hannah said. “Once upon a time, it was my big thing.” Noah tried to picture the grown-up Hannah, with her messy clothes and paint-stained hands, as a ballet dancer. It wasn’t easy.

Hannah saw the look of doubt on his face. She laughed. “Believe it or not, Mr. Spencer,” she said, pretending to be angry. “I was actually pretty good. I got all kinds of main parts.”

Hannah picked up the caterpillars, and they headed out the door. Noah teased, “If you were so good, why aren’t you still dancing?”

Hannah didn’t answer right away. She looked thoughtful. They reached the gym.

“I found out I didn’t love dancing,” she said finally. “I had talent, but I didn’t love it. I just loved the applause.”

Addy frowned. “How could you tell the difference?”

Hannah started untangling the mobiles. She hung them on rolling coat racks.

“Well, I started moving into better programs. There was more competition. I got fewer main parts. Less praise,” she said. “It didn’t make me want to work harder. It made me lose interest.”

She arranged the caterpillars on a table. “Meanwhile, I had spent all my extra time painting without anyone looking at me. That’s how I knew that art was my real love. It’s what I would do even if no one cared.”

Zoe nodded. “That’s how I feel about basketball. I want to win, but that’s not why I play. I love to spend every minute I can on the court.”

“Then that’s your true calling, Zoe,” Hannah said. She brushed her hands together. “We’re almost done. I’m sure you’re all starving. Noah, can you put up those watercolors? We’ll go across the street and bring back some takeout. I think the rain has let up.”
