Wednesdayâthree days before the wedding
Almost everyone slept in, exhausted from the prior dayâs excitement. My brother Rock arranged for several of our family and guests to go to the hotel restaurant for a late brunch, but I declined to accompany them. Slash had left to try to line up some intelligence resources to help crack the mystery of our attackers, and I badly needed some alone time.
I didnât have the energy to try on the wedding dress yesterdayâand Mom knew better than to force itâso she said sheâd stop by after brunch with it and a few cocktail dresses sheâd brought for me. I needed to be mentally ready to deal with that.
Iâd hung up and put away all of Slashâs things from his suitcase and had just finished changing into my favorite pair of jeansâthat only had one bullet hole in the lower left legâwhen my cell rang. I picked my phone off the bed where Iâd left it.
âHello?â
âLexi?â a slurred voice asked. âHi.â
âElvis? Whatâs wrong? You sound weird. Are you okay?â
âOf course Iâm okay. Why would you even slay that?â
âBecause youâre slurring your words?â I felt a twinge of alarm. âDidnât you go to brunch with the others? Whereâs Gwen?â
âI told Gwen I wanted to rest, so she went without me. But I didnât want to rest. I stayed in the room because of the surprise.â
I sat down on the bed. âWhat surprise? What are you talking about, Elvis?â
âI think you should come see for yourself.â
I immediately stood up, in full-blown alarm mode now. âAre you in your room?â
âI am. Itâs Room 950.â
It was just one floor down. He and Gwen must have been given the suite directly below us. âOkay. Donât go anywhere. Iâll be right there.â
I clicked off my phone and tossed it on the bed. I snatched the room card off the bureau as I dashed out of the room and took the stairs, two at a time. I had to knock several times before Elvis finally opened the door. He ushered me in with a grandiose sweep of his arm.
I didnât move and just stood in the hallway, staring at him, incredulous. âAre you drunk?â
âWhy do you say that?â
âBecause you smell like a bar, and you can barely stand. What are you doing?â
He leaned against the door, but it was more like he was holding himself up. âIâm getting ready.â
âReady for what?â
âYouâll see.â
Their suite was a mirror of oursâa living room area with a couch and a chair facing a large-screen television, as well as a small coffee table. To the right was a small rectangular dining table with four chairs directly across from a small kitchenette. The bathroom was a little farther up on the left. Four more steps from the bathroom took you into a separate bedroom with another television.
Elvis took a couple of unsteady steps toward the dining table and managed to make it into one of the chairsâ¦barely.
I followed him to the table. âElvis, what are you getting ready for?â
âThe big proposal.
