Chapter Twenty-two

Addison

Something changed the other day when he made breakfast. He was different. But then as quickly as it came, it went. After I saw his erection and ran away, he went back to being his old self. Locked away in the tiny bedroom tapping on his laptop or walking the beach alone.

I thought we had a connection. A breakthrough of sorts. But the temperamental man sitting in first class to my right with earbuds in is anything but the valiant guy who rescued me from my dream and made breakfast.

Rivi fusses more on this flight. When she starts crying, Hawk looks irritated. He glances around to see if others are too. Unlike the last flight, he’s not playful. He barely even looks at me or Rivi. Finally, he turns up the volume on his music and reclines his seat, acting just like the asshole everyone thinks he is.

Once I get Rivi calmed down, I stare at his profile. His strong jaw, chiseled to godlike perfection. His long lashes that surely are the envy of every woman alive. His unruly hair that my fingers yearn to rake through.

Here’s the thing though: he acts like an asshole, but I’m not really sure he is one. Maybe it’s one and the same, but I get the idea he acts the way he does because he’s putting up a front. Hiding from his true self maybe.

I close my eyes and think of the single kiss we shared. I can almost hear his voice. “You should quit. Because if you don’t, I can’t guarantee it won’t happen again.”

There were fleeting moments on the trip when I thought it would happen again. Like when he came into my room after my nightmare. Or when he made me breakfast. And I find myself utterly disappointed that it didn’t. Despite the fact that my brothers would kill me; regardless of it being the worst idea on the planet; aside from the reality that nothing could ever come from it—I want him. I want him so badly I can feel it in every bone in my body. Every cell of my being.

I gaze out the window wondering how I can be in love with a douchebag.

Back at home (it’s not lost on me that I call it home now), I unpack Rivi’s stuff, feed her and get her settled in her electric baby rocker that has more Bluetooth settings than the Cadillac. I watch her sway lightly back and forth, wondering why Hawk bothers to buy only the best, most expensive baby stuff for a kid he doesn’t seem to want very much.

Then again, like I told Tag on the phone, I believe he just hasn’t found that connection with her. He’s a bachelor to his core. Everything about being a father goes against the man he’s grown up to be. Maybe when Rivi smiles at him his icy heart will thaw. Or when he hears her giggle, which I already know will be the best sound in the whole world.
