THE EXAMPLE OF CHRIST
A story in the gospel of Mark illustrates Christ's willingness to touch the untouchable. It is difficult for us to imagine the loathsomeness of leprosy. The victim experienced lethargy and pain. Discolored patches appeared over his body. Pink and brown nodules appeared and ulcerated, emitting a foul discharge. The voice became hoarse, the breath wheezing. The head became contorted, causing the person to appear almost inhuman. Finally, nerve fibers became infected, causing a loss of sensation. Eventually fingers and toes fell off. In short the leper became a hideous sight. According to the Old Testament regulations, he was to tear his clothes and cry, âUnclean! Unclean!â whenever others came near. He did not even have the right to speak to other human beings. Eventually, he would die in loneliness.
With a cry of desperation, the leper in Mark 1 says, âIf You are willing, You can make me cleanâ (v. 40). His plea was not just for healing but also for significance. He wanted to matter to somebody.
Christ had compassion on him. He did the unthinkable âthe Son of God reached out to touch the leper. Christ could have healed the man without touching him, but the Savior wanted to identify Himself with this poor, hapless soul. Along with the touch, Christ spoke these words, âI am willing; be cleansedâ (v. 41). The leper probably never forgot those gracious words. If you are emotionally starved, you will not forget words of love and encouragement spoken to you by friends or relatives.
