The next day, Paisley parked her truck near a café in the small town and climbed out of the cab.
She toned down her usual enthusiasm as she glanced at her watch. Sure enough, sheâd arrived early. Looking eager was never a good idea. Madeline was a prime example of that. She looked cold and aloof, and men fell at her feet left and right. Not that it had done her any good, and compassion for her friend squeezed Paisleyâs heart.
Then her gaze traveled to the shop across from the café where the window display shimmered with ballerina-slipper-pink, emerald-green, and turquoise dresses. Artificial flowers and butterflies danced in the heated air around them. That was her kind of shop. Tempted by a siren call, she hurried to the crossing.
Her spirits were up because she was going on a date with Cormac. Well, maybe not a date. A something.
What was she doing? She should be walking away from him, at least emotionally. Instead, in her mind, she wasnât just running, she was sprinting toward him. Jumping over obstacles even. In her mind, of course. In reality, she didnât like running or any kind of physical activity. The only times sheâd jumped high had been over Madelineâs German shepherd, Rusty, and not very successfully.
The light turned green, and she made a few steps forward, her gaze lingering on the shop window. Then a grumbling motor made her head jerk to the left.
What on earth?
A motorcycle was driving right toward her at high speed. Didnât people know the speed limit was low here? That person would slow down, right?
That didnât happen. Then the warning from the note on the windshield flashed in her mind.
STOP SEARCHING. OR ELSE.
Her insides went cold. Run forward or step back? Running forward made more sense, but if the motorcyclist was out to get her, whoâd say he wouldnât swerve in her direction?
Or should she fight back? She did carry her small gun in her purse, and all the foster sisters in their family had learned how to shoot after a tragic thing happened to one of them at eighteen. But could she risk shooting someone else? Several people were on the sidewalk.
And what if it was just someone drunk, not someone out to get her?
She hadnât understood before how the proverbial deer could just stand in the headlights instead of running. She understood it now. Panic and indecision could cost her life.
