I never got to hear the juicy gossip Georgie had to impart because a group of fifteen ladies entered the store just as she was about to spill the tea, so to speak. I scrambled to put Elroy and Clem into their little pen, unsure how they would handle the crowd who immediately began tittering all over the shop.
I muttered a goodbye to Georgianne as one of the women approached to ask a question.
A few hours later, I collapsed into one of the cushy seats in the store to get off my feet. It turned out the women were downtown for a Bible study luncheon and had decided to peruse the shops. Thankfully for me, they bought quite a few of my books and even took flyers for the forum as well.
The dayâs sales made me feel I had a little bit of breathing room so that I didn't need to pin so much hope on the project with the Mark Dean Bell house. Maybe I could take a night off. Iâd been telling myself I was beginning to obsess a little over the project and a good deal on the subject of suicide. I knew it was true.
I had to get out of that pattern, but it was so darned easy to fall into. After all, that was how Iâd become so obsessed before.
âVangie,â I told myself as I got up from the seat. âLetâs keep it together, okay? This is just another part of my job.â
I set about the task of closing down the Nook, turning out lights and unplugging all of the scent warmers. I was just about to let the kids out of their gate when the bell jingled over the door. When I looked up, I expected to find a customer that I might have to shoo out the door. Instead, I was in for a big surprise.
âAustin!â I exclaimed approaching the smiling young man. A young man with a grin that reminded me so much of his father
âHey there, Aunt Vangie,â he said. âWe were in the neighborhood, and I wanted to come by and say hi.â
A very pretty redheaded girl stepped in from behind him, waving her hand and smiling hello.
âThis is Mary Broussard, my girlfriend.â
âHowdy, Mary. So good to meet you.â I put my hand out for her, shook it, then wrapped my arms around my cousin for a great big hug.
âIt's good to meet you, too, Miss Guillory,â Mary said.
âOh, please, please, just call me Vangie. You can call me Aunt Vangie if youâre of a mind. I mean, Iâm not really Austinâs aunt, but he calls me that anyway.â
He laughed and nodded enthusiastically. âEveryone calls her Aunt Vangie.â
âHey, would you like to grab a bite to eat or something? I have to bring the kids home.â I pointed over my shoulder at the pig and the cat who were looking intently at us from behind their gate.
Austin shot me an amused expression. âYou have a pig?â
I chuckled. âNo, not my pig.
