Chapter 24
Havok
HAVOK SWALLOWED THE bile that continued to bubble to the surface every time the body memory of shifting gripped her. Not that it hurt, because it didnât. It was the overload of sensations. It felt like she was taking in sensory information from both her human senses and the wolfâs at the same time. Thatâs because you are the same. She shook her head to rid it of her own voice. The sensation of the way the wind would move through her fur, how the underbrush smells, and small animals taste tried to overpower her. The craving and hunger rumbled her core at the thought of meat. The bile rose again. She turned her head to the side; she refused to have it blow in her face if she vomited. Better to splatter the two of them behind her. Havok. Havok please. She knew the pleas were coming from within her head. No, not just her head, but the Princessâs head. She swallowed. It was not really in her head, either. It was this place, this place where they were when she shifted. It had surprised her, the bright light and then flying through something thicker than air. Alora beside her, then behind her, then facing her, like they were circling one another. Then they were back-to-back and Havok felt Aloraâs hand slide into hers. She remembered her spirit self glancing down at their clasped fingers, thinking she expected them to be soft, but they were hard and strong like hers.
They were in a room with no walls, just night sky and doors all around. There was something else in the room, but then the sensation of the shift pulled her into her body. Alora screamed for her from the spirit room as she fled. She tried to call back to her, but the rumble of her roar as it tore from her new mouth overwhelmed her words. Her screams eaten by this beastâs howls as bones elongated and muscles stretched. Her skin came alive as fur sprang from her arms, enveloping her gear. She felt every nerve tingle across her skin like insects covered her. Then cool hands had been there, calming her, relieving the pain. Whispering eased through her mind like a cool breeze through a forest. I am here; you are here; we are safe. It was the Princess. They were the same words she had heard her use with the General at the stables. She was aware then that she was on all fours looking down on the General. He looked both horrified and awed at the same time. Tears poured down his face, yet he made no move to wipe them away. She turned her wolf head feeling the weight of it, the strength of the jaws. Aloraâs spirit was in view, her beautiful purple hair billowing around her. Her skin glowed like the full moon. We have to say the words to complete the bond. I am you...Havok shook her head, shaking loose the memory with it, like she had done when it had happened.
