CHAPTER SIX

FLORIDA, 2009

Friday

Andie found out Heidi lived in the dorms less than two miles from Zac’s fraternity house. Zac had morning classes, and she told him she had some souvenirs to buy and wanted to take a stroll down the beach. Instead, she was walking down the sidewalk with black sunglasses low on her nose, letting her mind wander as she passed a group of college students decked out in their beach attire for the day. The other day, Heidi had spoken to Jack Shelby as if they’d been meeting regularly. She knew Jack was aware of the campus drugs because Zac had told her as much. What she didn’t know was how or when Jack and Heidi decided to team up? And if their allegiance added up to them tracking down the drug dealer or if they were the drug dealer, simply using Zac’s concerned citizen nature as cover.

One thing, she did know she didn’t like Zac being used. Not by an ex-bed partner nor by a criminal on the loose. Someone was on to him, and she planned to snuff that person out.

Coming to a stop outside the Baxter dormitories, she looked up at the housing unit and sighed. Women talked to each other. But did twenty-one-year-old college students talk to a woman five years older and working a full-time job who had no time to party.

She was about to find out.

She climbed the stairs two at a time. The wide double doors jokingly glared at her as if she was never good enough to be a college co-ed who cut ties with their family to chase their own future. Her stomach knotted. She shook off the unpleasant feeling and reminded herself Bushwhack was in his blood, and nothing would change that fact. She pulled opened the doors, spotting the resident advisor’s desk to her left. She approached the desk, staring down the redheaded college girl distracted by a textbook.

Andie cleared her throat. “I’m here to see Heidi Cross.”

The resident advisor eyed her. “And who are you?”

“A friend visiting from out of town.” Andie could feel the sweat pooling under her underwire bra. Apparently, college kids running dormitory management caused her to have a panic attack.

A clipboard flopped down on the counter, then the girl said, “I need you to sign your name. University policy is every visitor must be logged in. The residents in the dorm think it’s stupid. A hassle for their boyfriends, and it makes me the bad guy, but if you could sign and show me your ID, that’ll help me keep my job.”

Sneaking into a dormitory was much easier than fighting off bears at a campsite. She wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing even though it helped her. After a quick consideration, she concluded not good, but at least they kept a visitor log of all names who entered.

Andie happily showed the resident advisor her ID and signed her name on the clipboard. “You aren’t the bad guy. Not by a long shot.
