This is the first moment in which Moshe is shown to be aware that the Hebrews are his kin—a pivotal point in his personal development. His act of hiding the Egyptian coincides with the beginning of his emergence from “self-hiding”—that is, his coming to awareness that although he was raised as an Egyptian, he also belongs to another people. That awareness will ultimately lead him to find his calling.

The next day, Moshe sees two Hebrews fighting. He intercedes, asking the aggressor why he is striking his “fellow.” The aggressor retorts, “Are you going to kill me the way you killed the Egyptian?” Moshe now realizes that the matter is known: he can no longer hide who he is and what he has done.
