CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

Not wanting Sully or any other neighborhood cops to see his disguise, Max made a quick change at his hotel room, then drove over to District Eleven to meet O'Grady and Geist. Halfway down the hall to his office, he spotted the two plainclothes detectives who had been assigned to stake out Saint Augustine's at night.

"Hey, guys, how's it going? Anything new to report?"

The two men stopped and waited for Max. Both young, one had big shoulders straining the seams of his shirt, crew cut black hair that made his head look like a brush, and thick eyebrows. Small and wiry, the second man had quick, nervous movements, and sharp features that reminded Max of a rat.

“Place is deader than a morgue,” brush head said.

“Nothing else?"

"Oh, yeah. Almost forgot." The smaller one reached into his pocket, pulled out a crumpled envelope and handed it to Max. "This came in the mail the other day.”

Max opened the envelope and scanned its contents, his incredulity growing with each line. It was all there. The stakeout at Cedar Grove, the mission, the closets, the sickle.

He re-read the last few lines.

The street magician who’s been there in the past few weeks is the man you need to watch. He leads the sacrifices. He’s the one behind the murders.
