While I’m in the car on my way home, Ally calls my cell phone. Earlier, we had exchanged phone numbers, and something tells me that I am going to regret giving Ally mine—especially since it seems like she’s inclined to abuse those privileges already. I’m a woman who needs space, and I’ve already seen her or talked to her on four separate occasions in less than twenty-four hours.

“Hello? This is Nicole.”

“It’s Ally again,” she whispers into the phone.

“Is everything okay?”

“No,” Ally squeaks.

“What’s wrong?”

“I hear the same voices outside again.”

“Ally,” I sigh. “You live near the breezeway on the first floor. You are going to have to get used to hearing other residents walking past your apartment door.”

“I don’t think that’s what it is,” she says in a hushed voice. “I think it’s the same people as last time coming back to see if they can break in.”

“How can you be sure of that?” I’m doubtful, but I let her state her claim.

“It sounds like the same people.”

“Can you check out your window and see if there is anyone out there?” I’m trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, although I’m unconvinced.

“No, I haven’t done that. I’m afraid they’ll see me and try to hurt me for being a ‘witness.’”

“Can you turn a light on so they know that someone is home and it might spook them away?” I ask.

“My lights are on,” Ally insists.

“All right,” I say and turn the steering wheel. Normally I like to bike to work or walk, but our headquarters where I had to do the paperwork is a little further out, so I had to take my car tonight. “I’m pulling into the apartment complex right now. I’ll come check it out for you in a minute, just hold on tight.”

“Thank you so much.” Ally breathes a sigh of relief into the receiver. “You are such a lifesaver, Nicole.”

“It’s really nothing, don’t mention it,” I say and hang up, heading to my designated parking spot where I pull in, and hope for the best.

I really want to believe Ally, but part of me is afraid she might have ulterior motives to get me into bed with her. Will I be strong enough to resist her seductive temptation? The jury is still out on that one.

I walk toward our building. Upon first glance, I don’t see anything unusual.

It’s relatively quiet for early dawn which is normal, and there is a silver hue painted across the sky that hasn’t yet achieved sunrise status.

A film of wispy fog hangs just below my ankles, skating across the grass and on the pavement where I’m drifting along the sidewalk.

I pass my own stairwell to get to Ally’s apartment. I’m tired, but I promised her I’d check in on her just to make sure nothing out of the ordinary captures my attention.

I’m not expecting to see anything alarming, so when I reach her door, it’s no surprise to me that everything appears to be undisturbed and in regular order.

I debate whether to knock on the door, because she’s already a little frazzled as it is.
