Chapter 6

Owen

Sleeping next to Joey was the best thing ever. Even though he had to get up twice during the night to check on Nana, he came right back and cuddled up with me, and we fell asleep easily. He felt like home to me in a way I hadn’t felt around anyone before. The closest that I had to that was Liam and his partners, but they were literal family. Not that family automatically meant home, my brother and I knew that intimately.

As the morning progressed, we got to the point where we were sat on the porch again, with Nico behind the camera as we talked everything over. Myra had come to stay with Nana, but she was going to have to leave within four hours, so time was limited if Joey wanted to stick with us.

Normally it was fine if the family didn’t stay at the search locations, in fact, oftentimes they didn’t because it was too painful. By now I knew Joey enough to know that he’d want to be there.

We decided to take another drive, back to the north side of town to see if there was any chance Matty had gone into the river at the northern bridge into town. If not, there was still the one at the northern dirt road, but we weren’t hopeful with that one, since it was the shallowest part of the river near town.

Once we got going, we went to the little park that was by the river, because it had a deck over the river’s edge and we could film there as we peered in.

After the intro, Liam gestured behind us. “That there, is the road to the farm where Matty Laine was working that day. As you can see, there’s too much farmland between the river and the road for him to even accidentally drive across all that to go into the river here. The only way we’ve figured it could’ve happened in this particular location is that he was driving to town and missed the bridge for some reason.”

“Right, and while the river is pretty deep here, it would be a miracle if nobody saw anything. A lot of people were coming into town that night, and the tracks of a car going into the river in the fresh snow would’ve been obvious to anyone, especially with a truck that size,” I added.

Joey was looking toward the river, and he shook his head. “I don’t think he’s here. We’re missing something about this whole picture.”

“I agree. We’ll bring out the dinghy and comb the river if you want, but I don’t think he’s here, either.” Liam turned the other way, where we could see the river continuing to the north-east. “That’s the way to the final bridge he could’ve taken going home that night. We’ll check it out even though Joey tells us it’s too shallow, but we like to be thorough and rule out locations.”

We filed back into the car and drove across the bridge, then turned right at the intersection where left would’ve led to the farm.
