The Enemy Within
Our beautiful cushion â my favourite â is not on the sofa, where it should be. Itâs not in my study, where it could be. And itâs not in the attic, where it would never be. I know, because Iâve checked all those places. Our beautiful cushion is missing, disappeared, gone.
âCushion, did you say?â Angela pokes at the keyboard of her laptop. Listening, but not really.
âThe zebra hide cushion. From Namibia. Itâs vanished, Angela.â
âMust be somewhere.â
âIt should be on the sofa. The gazelle cushion goes on the right, the zebra on the left.â
âSince when?â
âSince whenever I tidy up. I arrange them like that. Itâs symmetrical. Zebra, gazelle. Looks nice. Well, it used to look nice. But now thereâs no zebra cushion, see?â I point at the sofa.
Angela glances across. âItâll turn up. When did you notice?â
âFifteen minutes ago. I canât find it anywhere. This is weird.â
âDid you check the garage?â Angela turns back to her laptop and continues checking something more important.
âThe garage? Why would that cushion be in the garage, Angela?â
âYou never know. Anyway, if you check, please bring me a bottle of mineral water?â
The cushion is not in the garage and our little jeep will not answer my questions, so obviously it knows something. I grab a bottle of mineral water from a shelf, carry it into the house and pour a glass for Angela, who says, âWell?â
I pace the room, checking corners and peeping under cupboards. âNo luck. Know what I think?â
Angela sips water, calm in my crisis. âNo idea.â
âSomeone stole it.â
âObviously.â
âSomeone who liked our cushion.â
âAbsolutely.â
âSomeone whoâs been in the house.â
âTell me youâre not serious.â
âIâm serious.â
âMike, donât be silly, who would do such a thing?â
âSomeone whoâs been in the house. They saw it and theyââ
âA visitor stole our zebra cushion? Donât be ridiculous.â
âAngela, a cushion doesnât just vanish. It was on the sofa, there. Now itâs gone. So, you tell me. What do you think?â
âParanoia, is what I think. People donât steal cushions.â
I stand near the big window, looking at the mountains capped with snow under a pale blue sky. Neat little farmhouses dot the valley below us. Itâs a glorious view and weâre lucky to live here, which makes it all difficult to believe a friend or neighbour would steal from us. But someone did. Someone out there knows where our lovely cushion is. Someone who waited until our backs were turned. Iâll crack this little mystery. I just need to think.
âI have an idea, Angela. Iâm going to look at some photos.â
âPhotos?â
âYes, for clues. Ovidiu and Alina visited in November, right? We sat on the sofa for a selfie. If the cushion was on the sofa, weâll be able to see it. That will provide a time frame.â
âUnless one of us sat in front of the cushion.â
âI hadnât thought of that.â
âWho do you think you are, Lieutenant Colombo?â
âWe all start somewhere. Iâll start with photos.â
Settled at my laptop, I browse folders of various snaps until I spot what Iâm looking for.
âAngela, I found one, come and look.
