âYou donât look very happy,â Guillory said when he got off the phone.
âWeâve been told to drop it.â
She smiled despite his obvious irritation.
âI believe your unsympathetic reply would be, welcome to my world. The world of idiots in senior positions following their own agendas and telling you what to do. Anyway, drop what? Weâve done what we came to do. It wasnât a happy ending, but hey, ho.â
âYou donât think theyâd like to know if Freya was in on it with her brother?â
âIâm sure they would. Maybe things are in motion to try to determine that at this very moment. Just not with our participation.â
He shook his head, frustration and confusion in his voice.
âI canât believe you can switch off like that.â
âIâm paid to do as Iâm told. You get used to it. What is it you didnât want to drop, anyway?â
âThe Lakenheath angle.â
She nodded, a big long stroke that made her look a bit like a horse.
âItâs been promoted to an angle now, has it?â
He gave up as a text came in from Chandler with the details of the clinic and the appointment heâd set up. It gave him something else to complain about.
âThatâs not all.â
âI heard you say about a DNA test. Itâs hardly surprising.â
âHe wants us to take her to an appointment heâs already set up.â
She took a deep breath. Shook her head as she let it out, reinforcing the horse similarity. There was frustration in her own voice now.
âHeâs a lawyer, for Christâs sake. He works for a rich, demanding old man. He thinks ahead. I know thatâs a difficult concept for you to grasp.â She tapped her breastbone with her finger. âIâd have been surprised if he hadnât set it up.â
She was right. Didnât mean he had to like it.
âYou want to handle it? Go back to Freya, pretend we didnât as good as run away yesterday without telling her how we just caught her brother and handed him over to the police for killing her husband. And by the way, stop sniveling and get your legs open, weâre taking a tissue sample. Deep breath, my hands are cold.â
She looked at him a long while. Trying so very hard not to smile, even if her eyes refused to play ball.
âMaybe I will take the lead, after all, Dr. Buckley.â
