CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

So much for ignoring Nate, I was hanging onto his every word… and so far he’s only said three!

“Wait…” I said shaking my head, like I could shake the puzzle pieces into place. “I’m confused,”

Nate chuckled leaning back and beckoning me into the living room. The late afternoon sun casted an orange glow in the room. The room looked much brighter than it usually does, must be all the glass ornaments reflecting the sun’s rays.

Nate sat down on a sofa, his arm draped over the backseat, his left leg ankle resting above his knee. I took a seat on the couch opposite him, still with the warm tea in between my palms.

Nate opened his mouth to speak, I was already sitting on the tip of the sofa but someone beat him too it.

“Ashwey?” Nate sighed and I smiled at the little girl. Her raven hair was done into a neat sock bun on top of her head making me wonder who did it, surely not Nate and I doubt the little three-year-old girl could pull that off… I barely can. She ran to me hopping onto the sofa beside me, her legs tucked under her body.

“Sky wait I’m not done-” Our eyes met at the same time. My confused state seemed to match hers but then my heart dropped.

She was tall and slender, fair skin and honey curls. Blue eyes and long lashes. She looked like she climbed out of a Victoria’s secret magazine. I felt about six inches tall under her gaze, my exposed arms suddenly felt fat and flabby and I wondered why I even bothered with skinny jeans?

“Uhm, Gemma this Ashley, Ashley Gemma,” Nate said curtly introducing us to each other. Gemma, it even sounded model worthy. Ashley was such a common name, I mean even my father’s used-to-be girlfriend had that name!

“Hello,” She replied a bit weary, like she was forcing the words out of her mouth. I gave her a small closed lip smile.

“Gem could you do me a favour and take Sky to the park for a little while?” My eyes flickered back to Nate but he was already watching me. Gem, she even had a nickname. The little green monster inside of me suddenly turned into Hulk.

“Yeah, we were actually just going to her ballet practice. Come on Sky,” Her voice was much warmer now, her two rows of perfect white teeth even intimidating me from over there. Sky looked between me and the beautiful girl before pouting.

“But I wanna play with Ashwey,” I tried to hide the smile but I also wanted to point at the girl and shout: ‘HA! Take that!’

“Sky please,” Nate said giving her a pointed look. I know that look, it’s the look my mother gives me too if I refuse to listen. The you-better-star-listening-or-you’re-grounded look. Sky sighed scurrying off the sofa and following the blonde. She declined her outstretched hand making my smile widen.

Nate didn’t start talking like I expected him too, instead he waited in silence.
