I wrench my hand from hers as I jump to my feet, almost knocking Donna over in the process. “No! No! NO! He can’t be - like I said, he’s just working away.”

Donna reaches for me. Her hand lands on my shoulder. “Come here Charlie. It’s going to be OK. I’m here now. I’m going to take care of you.”

“How’s it going to be OK? What are you even talking about?” I tug myself from her grasp. “My dad’s not even dead. No way. Do you hear me?”

I pace the length of the hall and then sink to a crouch next to the wall, clutching my hair within my fists. My dad’s not dead. My dad’s NOT dead.

I glance up. The two of them are exchanging glances. Despite their obvious dislike of one another, they seem to have formed an alliance here.

The police radio echoes from the kitchen. There’s a beep and a crackle before we hear the low tones of DI Laycock. None of us move for a few moments.

“When? Where?” Eventually I speak, but my voice is a whisper.
