On our ride home a few minutes later, Santi and I sat quietly for a bit. My brain was weaving around, trying to put threads together. Tuskins was clearly still in love with Viola McNamara, and it seemed that maybe she had still loved him, too, or at least cared for him in some way since she kept his note. Yet they hadnât gotten back to each other, even after all these years and all this societal change, including a shift that would have probably made it possible for her to do all she wanted and for him to approve.
âUnless he still didnât approve?â I blurted out into the car.
âWhat? Approve of what? Who is he?â Santi glanced over at me. âWhat are you talking about, baby?â He was laughing now.
I smiled back. âDo you know anything about JudgeTuskins, as a judge, I mean?â
Santi nodded. âI did a little research. Heâs pretty moderate, it seems. Careful to uphold the letter of the law but also not extreme. Apparently, he has a soft spot for younger people who get into trouble. The attorney I talked to said he likes to give second chances to people who might have made a simple bad choice.â
This all aligned with what Iâd seen of the man so farâkind but no-nonsense. âSo heâs not a wild law and order kind of guy, not prone to try to send a message with worse sentences or something?â
My husband chuckled. âYou have watched way too many law dramas, Paisley. Yes, judges have predispositions and patterns, but itâs not like they can just use the law the way they want.â
I sighed. âTV makes everything so much easier.â
âYes, yes, it does,â he said. âBut what were you thinking that made you ask that?â
I turned in my seat to face him fully. âIâm trying to understand why two people who cared about each other enough to save notes and build gazebos for decades and lived only a little distance apart didnât just get together.â
âAnd you were thinking Tuskins might have still been a bit anti-feminist?â
âYou know me so well. Did you get any sense of that?â
Santi shook his head. âNo, but I will say that in this job, I find people are not always consistent. In fact, we rarely are. He could be pretty open-minded about some things but still thinks women shouldnât work. You know what I mean?â
I did know. My own dad was that wayâtotally great with my friendsâ trans kids but still thought homeless people should just get a job. Some belief systems were just further entrenched than others.
I sighed and turned back to rest against my seat as my brain continued to pick through the tidbits of information weâd learned in the past week. Olivia Weiss had a history of disappearing, a fact Santi had found rather infuriating since no one had told him that when he started looking for her. The hidden broach with the note from Abe Tuskins wasnât from Abe Tuskins. And now, Tuskins had
