“G ods Lita, what were you thinking?” I ask her as she floats next to me.

It’s night out, so she is blending in. It seems one of the things her orb comes with is a damn good cloaking device. Though she’d admitted that all she was doing was showing images of what was behind her. When someone looked directly at her, she might as well have been invisible, because their gaze only saw what was behind her.

We are out for a walk, to get some fresh air. Fiona is with me, and we are locked arm in arm.

“He never said we had to hide the magic, did he?” Lita pouts in a mulish tone.

“He never said to blaze it across the skies, either,” I tell her with a sigh.

“Zach,” Fiona says, patting my arm. “Are you saying that now that we can do magic, we need to hide it from everyone?”

“Well, yes,” I tell her.

“Why?” she asks me pointedly.

I start to open my mouth to answer, but end up closing it after a couple of seconds. I don’t have a good answer. “I honestly don’t know. I just think that we should keep this on the down low.”

“Down… low?” Fiona asks, looking at the ground.

“I just mean we shouldn’t make a spectacle of ourselves.”

“Agreed,” Fiona says, obviously thinking it over while tapping her lips. “But Zach,” she says, looking up at me. “We won’t be able to hide this forever.”

“I know.” I blow a raspberry. “I just don’t want either of you two getting hurt.”

“Uhh… hello,” Lita says. “I’m made of something stronger than anything else in this realm.”

“Yes. I guess you are. But what about us?” I ask her, looking at where the voice came from, since I can barely make out her outline in the dim light.

“You have magic now,” Lita says, and I can almost imagine her shrugging. “You can use it to fight any idiots dumb enough to try and stop you.”

“Fight?” Fiona asks her.

“Of course. With Zach being able to throw fireballs, and now with you being able to throw water daggers, who is going to get in your way?” Lita offers.

I look over at Fiona, and she’s looking up at me. “I mean, I guess we could do that. But I never thought about having to use it in a battle.”

“Then, I guess we need to practice that, right?” Lita says with a chuckle. “Zach and Fiona—Battle Mages.”

“Ooooo!” Fiona says with a giggle. “I love the sound of that!”

“But then what? What would we do with it?” I wonder.

“Well… we could go after monsters,” Fiona throws out.

“What?” I blurt out. Lita echoes my confusion.

“There is good money in monster hunting,” Fiona says, looking first at me and then towards where Lita hovers by my shoulder.

I’d stopped in my tracks when she’d mentioned monster hunting. “Wait... That’s a thing here?”

“Yes. Monsters sometimes get really bad. Usually, it’s worse just before the winter season, as they hunt to store up food for the winter months. But yes,” she says with a nod, having turned back to beam up at me.
