CHAPTER 31

As quickly as they began, the gunshots end. Quiet reigns once more.

I peer around the door and see a whole lot of dust kicked up. Then I see the two men lying still by the bottom of the corridor, close to the door to the gym.

Slowly, I walk down the corridor, aiming the rifle towards them as I go. As I get closer I can see they’re not moving. They’ll never move again in fact. Multiple dark red stains cover their clothing.

“Hey, it’s just me now,” I yell down the corridor, belatedly realizing that I don’t want to get shot by my own side. “Don’t shoot!”

After a few moments of stillness, I hear some shuffling from beyond the corridor inside the gymnasium.

“Kris!” Mikey shouts excitedly. “Are you hit?”

“No!” I shout back, the single word echoing across the bare walls of the corridor.

Mikey strides out, stooping over his rifle as he walks. He sees me in the corridor and eases his posture a little. Then he makes a signal with his hand and Dina and Salman follow.

“How many?” Mikey asks, approaching me slowly.

“Two here, two outside,” I say, turning back to the door. He puts his hand on my shoulder as if to drag me back. I let him take the lead, and we slowly walk outside looking down the length of our rifles.

When we get outside, the man I’d hit with the rifle butt repeatedly is still lying there in the shallow moonlight. The other, who I’d kicked the gun away from, is nowhere to be seen.

“He’s gone,” I say to Mikey, pointing to the cobbled road he lay on – groaning and moaning – when I left the scene.

I run back to the farmhouse and take a look over the landscape. Mikey and Salman talk between themselves and set out searching for him, while Dina goes back to check on the man I left lying.

My hands are shaking still; I try to rub the sweat off my brow, but find my fingers don’t work as they should. I rake them across my forehead and take a moment to breathe deeply.

I see Dina pick herself up and walk back into the corridor. I can’t help but look over at the man laying there in the gutter. He’s still not moving.

You seemed to handle that well, Vega says.

He’s perhaps sensing my heartrate hasn’t quite slowed yet. I feel the wound on my temple for the first time. It throbs painfully, but I’ve survived far worse. I’m kind of glad I have it; something to make me remember I just fought for my life.

A couple of minutes later, Dina appears at the door to the schoolhouse holding the first-aid bag. She beckons me inside, and I slowly walk in.

“You’re hurt,” she says, forcefully turning my head round in her hands. Then she sets the bag down, opens it, and takes out a large bandage, which she rubs hesitantly between her fingers. “Here, let me help you.”

She begins to wrap the bandage around my head, but I block her with my hand.
