CHAPTER NINETEEN
There was too much going on with the case to confine everything to Camilleâs office. Instead, she and Palmer moved into one of several conference rooms within in the field office headquarters. With the help of a few other agents and interns, theyâd gotten everything they needed within forty minutes: maps of the routes the Whistlinâ Pig and Wheelerâs Delight had taken on the days of the murders, a schedule of all departure and docking times, and even a list of all employees that had been on board each boat on the days of the murders.
Camille had taped the maps to a large dry erase board, each route traced out in highlighter with the times jotted down in marker beneath them. On the other side of the board sheâd jotted down facts of the case they believed could hold true. A new one occurred to her as she compared the routes of each boat.
She turned her head just to make sure Palmer was still sitting at the conference table. Heâd been running in and out of the room for the past fifteen minutes or so while also looking over the records of the boatsâ employees. He was at the computer again, scanning the screen with great concentration.
âBeing that the boats are owned by two different companies, I think itâs safe to rule out the owners or anyone investing in either company,â she said. âSo as far as Iâm concerned, that rules out the murders being done as some sort of competitive retribution.â
âAgreed. And so far, Iâm pretty sure we can eliminate at least six of the seven employees Iâve looked into. And quite frankly, Iâm not sure what that leaves us. Aside from waiting and hoping that something comes back from forensics or the coronerâs reportsâ¦what can we do?â
It was a good question. And even though she hated to feel as if she was wasting time with the maps and the voyage times, Camille had to feel as if she were doing something. She compared the times to see if there were similarities, but the times of departure and docking for each trip were just as varied as the type of victims. The same was true of the sites and landmarks each trip had passed by. It started to become infuriating to know that the deeper they dug into the details of this case, the less it seemed that the victims or the boats were linked in any particular way.
âWhat about the cities?â she asked out loud, for no reason other than hoping Palmer could maybe springboard off one of her flimsy theories. âThere are a few points of interest each of the trips passed by. They all stay within New Orleans proper, but the trips that Brittany Gable and Kevin Pleasant were on did travel a bit outside of what most people would consider the city limits.â
After a few moments of silence, she turned to look at him again. He was reclining back in his chair with his arms crossed against his chest.
