The first light of dawn was just beginning to peek through the curtains of Shelby's cozy apartment when a soft knock at the door roused her from her slumber. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she padded across the room, her bare feet sinking into the plush area rug as she made her way to the entrance.

Opening the door, she was greeted by Lucy holding a tray of freshly-baked maple and cinnamon buns, their sweet aroma filling the air and making Shelby's mouth water.

"Good morning, sunshine!" Lucy chirped, her blue eyes sparkling with warmth and affection. "I thought you could use a little pick-me-up before we start the day."

Shelby stepped aside to let her friend come inside. "Lucy, you're an angel. Those smell absolutely delicious. I’m sorry, I overslept. I was so tired.”

“Then it’s a good thing I showed up or you wouldn’t have opened the bookshop until noon.” Lucy came in and greeted Harper, then said to her friend, “Go take a shower and get dressed while I make the coffee.”

Shelby returned fifteen minutes later as Lucy was setting the table with white mugs and small plates. The two women settled at the small, round kitchen table with steaming mugs of coffee and the sweet pastries. Harper, drawn by the enticing scent, leapt up onto a nearby chair, her eyes fixed on the treat-laden plate.

As they savored the sweet, sticky buns, Lucy began to tell Shelby about the new recipes she had been putting together at the bed and breakfast where she worked as the pastry chef.

"I've been experimenting with some healthier options," she explained, her voice filled with excitement. "I’m trying to create pastries that have no added sugar and no artificial sweeteners, but still taste amazing. I’m using different fruits, honey, and sometimes a bit of maple syrup in the recipes to give the new pastries a bit of a sweet taste. It's been a challenge, but I think I'm really onto a few things."

Shelby nodded, impressed by her friend's creativity and dedication. "If these maple-cinnamon sticky buns are any indication, I'd say you're definitely on the right track. They're absolutely delicious."

Lucy beamed, her cheeks flushing with pride. "Thanks. That means a lot. I’m so glad you like them."

As they continued to chat, Lucy's expression grew slightly dreamy, a soft smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "I have to tell you about the amazing dinner Ross and I had in Sweet Cove the other night. Being in a different place, just the two of us, seemed to make everything feel so romantic."

Shelby leaned in, her eyes wide with interest. "I want to hear all about it."

Lucy sighed, her gaze distant as she remembered the magical evening. "It was perfect. The restaurant was right on the water with these huge windows that looked out over the ocean. And Ross, he was so attentive and sweet. He even bought me a rose when we were walking around the main street afterwards."

Shelby squeezed her friend's hand, her heart full of happiness for her.
