Myth 02 - Myth Conceptions
Chapter Fifteen:
âFit worry about it tomorrow.â
-S. OâHARA
âUM . . . are the mercenaries waiting outside?â I asked finally.
âYou didnât answer her question, kid,â Aahz observed, peering at me with renewed suspicion.
âDonât strain your neck looking for your troops, handsome,â Tanda advised me. âThere werenât any. It seems our mighty negotiator has met his match.â
âThose bandits!â Aahz exploded. âDo you have any idea what it would cost us if I had agreed to pay their bar bill as part of the contract? If thatâs a nonprofit group, I want to audit their books.â
My hopes for salvation sank like a rock.
âYou didnât hire them?â I asked.
âNo, I didnât,â Aahz scowled. âAnd that moves us back to square one. Now weâve got to recruit a force one at a time.â
âDid you try-â I began.
âLook, kid,â Aahz interrupted with a snarl, âI did the best I could, and I got nowhere. Iâd like to see you do better.â
âHe already has!â Brockhurst announced, rising from his seat. âWhile you were wasting time, Skeeve here has hired himself a fighting team.â
âHe what?â Aahz bellowed, turning on his critic. âBrockhurst! What are you doing here?â
âWaiting for orders in our upcoming campaign,â the Imp replied innocently.
âWhat campaign?â Aahz glowered.
âThe one on Klah, of course,â Brockhurst blinked. âHavenât you told him yet, boss?â
âBoss?â Aahz roared. âBoss?â
âNo need ta shout,â Ajax grumbled, turning to face the assemblage. âWe hear ya plain enough.â
âAjax!â Tanda exclaimed gleefully.
âTanda!â the old man yelped back.
She was at him in a bound, but he smoothly interposed his bow between them.
âEasy, girl,â he laughed. âNone of your athletic greetings. Iâm not as young as I used to be, ya know.â
âYou old fraud!â Tanda teased. âYouâll outlive us all.â
Ajax shrugged dramatically. âThat kinda depends on how good a general the youngster there is,â he commented.
âKid,â Aahz growled through gritted teeth, âI want to talk to you! Now!â
âI know that temper!â Gus announced, emerging from the back room.
âGus!â Aahz exclaimed.
âIn the stone!â the gargoyle confirmed. âAre you in on this expedition? The boss didnât say anything about working with Perverts.â
Instead of replying, Aahz sank heavily into a chair and hid his face in his hands.
âTanda!â he moaned. âTell me again about how this kid can stay out of trouble.â
âUm . . . Aahz,â I said cautiously, âcould I talk to you for a minute ... privately?â
âWhy, I think thatâs an excellent idea . . . boss,â he said.
The smile he gave me wasnât pleasant.
âKid!â Aahz moaned after I had finished my tale. âHow many times do I have to tell you? This is the Bazaar at Deva! Youâve got to be careful what you say and to whom, especially when thereâs money involved.â
âBut I told them nothing was definite until we found out if you had hired someone else,â I protested.
âBut I didnât hire anyone else, so now the deal is final,â Aahz sighed.
âCanât we get out of it?â I asked hopefully.
âBack out of a deal on Deva?â Aahz shook his head. âThat would get us barred from the Bazaar so fast it would make your head spin.
