12. THE COMMONER’s DILEMMA

The solution to this apparently insoluble dilemma is amazingly simple. Announcing that he was taking white, our clever commoner reached into the bag, closed his fist around one pea, and quickly put it into his mouth and swallowed it. Naturally, everyone was curious and wondered which one he had chosen. The young man asked the King to show the pea that remained in the bag. It was black, of course, and the courtiers concluded that he had picked out the white pea. The King could not very well divulge his own nefarious plot, and so everyone lived happily ever after.
