Tara kept up the conversation as she led Isabella and me down the hall to the crown jewel of her sanctuary. “It will just be the three of us… make that four of us tonight.”

Isabella frowned as we walked. “Numbers aren’t down, are they? It would be a tragedy if you closed. If you need a sizable donation, please let me know. I would die if I couldn’t come here.”

Tara chuckled and shook her head. “No, no. It’s nothing like that. The earlier session was full, so I added another.”

We stepped into the serene open space bathed in the gentle evening light coming in through the large, floor-to-ceiling windows that showcased the glowing red rocks beyond. Various plants and carefully placed crystals amplified the room’s tranquil energy.

Isabella halted inside and turned to Tara. “Don’t tell me you added the class just for me.”

Tara gifted her a warm smile. “You know that I’m always available for a soul in need. I consider it my calling, and it’s no trouble. None at all.”

It was nice that Isabella noticed and appreciated Tara’s gift, but I didn’t want her to feel too awkward. “Don’t feel bad. I needed a session, too. Recent events have stirred the negative energy in my soul, and I need to center myself once again.”

Which was absolutely the truth.

I didn’t miss Tara studying me with a narrow-eyed gaze, and I quickly smiled to dispel her worries before I hurried forward to claim one of the oversized turquoise and gold boho cushions on the floor. I set Butternut next to me, and she curled up against my thigh, observing everything with wide green eyes that suggested she understood the reverence of the inner sanctum.

Tara gave us a few moments to settle before she started speaking in a soft, melodic voice. “As we begin, let the breath be your anchor. Inhale peace, exhale release. Let each breath draw you deeper into the sanctuary of your own heart.”

I closed my eyes, allowing my breath to sync with Tara’s guidance. The outside world fell away, other than the soft pulsing magic coming from Butternut, leaving only the rhythm of my breathing and the faint, harmonic sound of a crystal bowl being played. The resonance soothed my wounds and washed away the disappointment and pain from Nick’s rejection. It vibrated through my body and loosened the knots of tension.

As the session deepened, I drifted into a state of heightened awareness. In the silence of my mind, I sensed something foreign. There was a subtle, emotional undercurrent that wasn’t my own. Grief, tinged with anger and a profound sense of injustice, invaded my consciousness and startled me from my reverie.

I opened my eyes to find the other two women still deep in their meditations, and I quickly closed my eyes again, not wanting to disturb their energy. Unfortunately, the sensation of what had to be Isabella’s emotions invaded my thoughts and kept me from reentering that pleasant state.

I wasn’t tapped into her like before, but I also couldn’t discount the impression of deep-seated familial bonds and bitter disputes.
