Fifteen

Later that night, Dorigen, Declan, and I all sat at the kitchen table eating dinner. Well, Dorigen and I ate dinner – fried chicken and green beans. Declan sipped a mug of blood. I explained to him what had happened earlier in the day, Lucius had been unable to come up with any ideas on what to do next. And though I wasn’t holding out much hope, I asked Declan if he had any insight.

“I’m afraid I don’t, Bethany,” he said. “Despite the research that I’ve done on the manor, I honestly know very little about sorcery. Or mysticism. If there is magic at work on you, I don’t know what it would be or how to defeat it.”

Yeah, I’d figured as much. It was a longshot at best. But as Declan had said, he’d been researching things like Ellington Manor and Blood Heirs of Dracula, so I had hoped he’d come across some little tidbit that could help me.

Especially since the nightmare beast hiding somewhere in the mansion seemed to be responsible for all of this. Dorigen had called it an evil presence, and though I knew that was not correct, it felt authentic. It might not be evil at work, but it was darkness, and it was taking its toll on everyone. Declan had become more reserved and defensive in the last several weeks. Dorigen was haunted. And me? I was at the center of this mess, and the only way out at the moment seemed to be my death. Frankly, I was hoping for a better scenario than that.

I had just put another bite of chicken into my mouth when the doorbell rang. I stopped chewing immediately. Dorigen and I both exchanged a glance. Who would be calling at this hour?

There was only one logical answer. We weren’t expecting anyone, and it was after dark. Marcel Truffaut had returned.

“Dorigen,” I said in a commanding voice, “get a cross and some holy water.”

Her eyes opened wide for a moment. But she understood me clearly. With a nod, she dropped her napkin onto the table, rose, and left the kitchen.

“Holy water?” Declan said. “What’s going on?”

“If I’m not too much mistaken,” I said, a calm but dark note in my tone, “your friend, Marcel Truffaut, has returned at last.”

With that, I stood up and turned to leave the kitchen. Declan looked mystified. I had no idea why. Marcel had twice tried to kill me. We may have been allies when we parted company, but I did not trust him even an inch.

I met Dorigen at the door. She had a full water pistol in one hand and a large, wooden cross in the other. Lucius sauntered in a moment later.

“Who is it?” he asked.

“If it’s not Truffaut, I’ll be stunned,” I answered. I indicated Dorigen’s water gun. “Nice.”

“There’s a super-soaker full of the same stuff in the parlor,” she commented.

“I think we’re all overreacting here,” Declan said.

“Oh, are we?” I snapped. “You won’t tell us a damned thing more
