Chapter Eighteen

-5 Years Later-

The words I’d thought to myself all those years ago when I moved into my student apartment had come true, but that new life didn’t last forever.

Now I was about to board the flight back to Silverbell Shore. My four-year-old son was rocking on his feet beside me. I knew he was scared about the flight and leaving his home. Honestly, I didn’t blame him.

I had flown before so I wasn’t concerned about that bit. Going back to Silverbell Shore had me shaking and feeling worse than I had with my morning sickness. I could tell Austin was picking up on it, but I didn’t know what to say to him. He’d been asking questions about his dad since starting kindergarten.

How was I going to tell him the truth about his dad when Dallas didn’t even know he existed?

Pulling myself from my thoughts, I decided I needed to find something to occupy Austin on the flight so I didn’t have to face any more questions. He couldn’t understand why we were moving across the country, and I had my own questions about my motives.

I was fired from my job because I’d had to take too many days off for childcare due to an unreliable sitter, and sickness because Austin had brought another bug home from kindergarten. My employers had been shit, and I couldn’t hide it. Then my rent went up, my landlord didn’t care about my situation. He was a judgy retiree who hated that I was a single mom who needed to work. I was sure he’d been waiting for something to go wrong so he could kick me while I was down. It was his way of proving his point.

That bastard!

“Austin, do you want to get a coloring book and a story for the plane?”

“Yes please, Mommy.” My sweet little boy beamed.

I looked into his eyes, my heart squeezing as Dallas’s eyes looked up to meet mine. The minute Dallas Forbes set eyes on this kid, he would know. “Okay, let’s go and choose them.” I grinned, reaching out and wrapping his small hand in mine as we walked through the airport terminal to find the shops.

Finally finding a store which had books, I directed Austin inside and his eyes lit up seeing all the colorful children's books. “Mommy, this one.” He decided with a toothy grin as he pointed to a book with a beach on the cover.

“Okay.” I took it off the shelf. Seeing an ice hockey book behind it, I took that one too, knowing he loved his books, and I would get fed up reading the same one over and over for almost eight hours. God, I hoped Austin would get some sleep, mainly for my sanity. “Let’s go find you a coloring book too.” I tried not to think about my quickly dwindling bank balance.

Austin tucked his hand into mine again. I smiled at the ease having him close gave me. He tugged me toward the back of the store where the coloring books and pencils were.
