The term at peace was something Akhil often wondered about. He’d heard how soothing the feeling was to actually be at peace but had never acquired it. However, small previews of that feeling came to him whenever he was in Navada’s presence. He didn’t know what to make of it initially. Akhil assumed it was just the lust of being around a beautiful woman. Yet there was a constant peace that consumed him when he heard the sweet tone of her voice. When she looked at him, her gaze almost made Akhil’s heart stop beating. Her spirit spilled into him, making him feel inebriated at times.

Akhil’s regard centered on Navada. Her lids were low due to the alcohol she’d consumed at the club. She focused on his hands while giving him a hand massage. They were back at his place, spread out on the leather sectional listening to Mario’s “Get Back”. Corded pendant lights provided a dim glow in his industrial-style loft that had been his home for the last five years.

“If I was sober, your hand massage would've been a lot better,” she blurted with a slur in her words.

Smirking at her drunken speech, he replied, “It’s good enough.”

“I got that magic touch,” she bragged, wiggling her fingers.

Navada grabbed his other hand and began massaging it. While tending to his massage, she took a look around his place, acting as if she hadn't been there before.

“You got a lot of money, huh?”

Laughing at her observation, Akhil asked, “Why you say that?”

“Because I don’t know anyone who gets out of jail and comes home to a loft like this. Who are you for real?”

He chortled harder at her question. “I’m nobody special. Just a man who is financially responsible.”

“Mmhmm,” she hummed. “That’s what you say.”

“I wouldn’t lie to you. I thought I told you that during our first conversation.”

“I know something you haven’t told me.”

“What's that?”

“Why did you go to jail? I think I've been patient enough, and I know I could’ve looked it up, but I wanted you to paint the picture for me.”

Akhil drew in a deep breath and exhaled. He wished he could put that chapter of his life behind him but Navada deserved to know.

“Okay, so, I used to own this car shop that operated like a mechanic shop. But behind the scenes it was an actual chop shop.”

“So you use to cut the cars up?”

He shrugged. “Yeah but it was much more to it.”

Akhil had to be careful with his words because even though he wasn’t a part of The Familia anymore, there was still a rule that he couldn’t speak on it.

“Like what?” Navada asked.

“…So, people would bring me cars to break down if they committed a crime. Say somebody used a car in a robbery, they would bring it to me, I’d break it down, and get money for the parts. If somebody stole a car, I would do the same and we’d split money for the parts.”

“What if they committed a murder?”

Akhil stared at her, contemplating if he wanted to go that deep into his past.
