Chapter sixteen

Jake

Over the next two weeks, things became quiet, too quiet. Our daily lives became routine. I would show up for coffee in the mornings, we would go to the office together. Felicia worked on the piles of files and had finally gotten them sorted and put away. My job was running smoother because of her efficiency. She went with me when I had business to attend, and I found that she really did know how to handle a handgun. I wondered where she came up with that information. She still was closed-mouthed about her past. I was nearing my breaking point and ready to just run a background check on her. She did seem to be settling in well. I thought maybe we could go to Boulder on the weekend. She would enjoy seeing her house. My guys had been keeping an eye on it. I had yet to tell her the plans, though. She had been good to take Luke with her when she went out to the bookstore/coffee shop she liked. She had just come into my office to use the bathroom. Finishing up she started to leave but I stopped her.

“Why are you so antsy, Felicia?”

“Today is Friday; I get these itching stitches out.” She smiled a hundred-watt smile.

“Ha-ha,” I laughed, “I bet you really want to get them out too.”

“So when can we go?”

“I have a few more calls to make, and then I’ll be ready. Maybe a half hour.”

“Okay, I will just go file my nails,” she laughed with me, then left my office.

I made a call to our local vendors and then called Bruni’s office.

“Hello, Mr. Bruni’s office; how may I assist you?”

“Tell Mr. Bruni that Mr. Mason is on the line for him.”

“I will see if he is available. He is in a meeting.”

“You tell him it is Mr. Mason, and he is in a hurry.”

“Just a minute, please.” The secretary simpered.

Within a matter of minutes, Bruni answered the phone personally. I would have liked to see what he did with the secretary for making me wait.

“Bruni,” I started, “Tell me how things are going in your neck of the woods.”

“Fine, sir. The monthly cut has been increased as per our conversation when you were here. The next board meeting is set up for Monday. Will you be in attendance?”

“Yes, we will be.”

‘We? Are you bringing my Exec Secretary back?”

“No, but she will be with me when we come. I will be seeing you on Monday. I expect the books to be accurate this time.”

“Oh, they are, sir, they are. We will await your attendance on Monday. If there was nothing else, I have a meeting I need to get back to. It is with a new businessman in Boulder. Mr. Sanchez.”

“That wouldn’t be Miguel Sanchez, would it?”

“Why yes, do you know him?” Bruni asked.

“What business is he investing in?”

“The Marsen Strip Joint”

“Will he be attending the meeting on Monday? Does he know that a percentage goes to us?”

“Yes, sir. He is aware and doesn’t have a problem with it.
