“What, what merger are you talking about?” I asked, stammering like a moron.

They exchanged a look, and it was one that I knew exactly what they were thinking. Moron. There was no doubt in my mind that was exactly what they were thinking.

“Come on, don’t play that dumb with us,” Summer said.

I shook my head again. “I really, truly, don’t have the faintest clue what you guys are talking about,” I said again, and again they exchange a look like they didn’t believe what they were hearing was possible.

“We’re been keeping an eye on you, just like we’ve been keeping an eye on your employer. We know you work for him, and we know you two are involved. There is no way you don’t know about the merger.”

They honestly didn’t understand how secretive he was, and how his very special assistant Sonya was the one that seemed to always be there for all of his very important meetings.

“I mean, I schedule everything, but I’m just getting up to speed guys. The man’s one of the richest men in the world for God sake. It’s not he hangs on my every word. Far from it. He’s got other assistants who actually attend his meetings.”

“Like Sonya Gold?”

I swallowed hard. Just nodding, just confirming what they wanted to hear felt like a betrayal, and while I wanted to not get straight up stabbed I also had no plans on betraying the man I was falling for, or my fellow coworkers. That just did not sit well with me.

“You know, you’re going to tell us more, whether you want to or not. You do get that, don’t you?” Fall growled.

I shook my head slightly, while still not making eye contact with him. If Summer was the one who talked the most, and took the lead interacting with the people he was hired to threaten, it was fairly obvious that Fall was more of the muscle guy, and the one that was more unhinged.

“I…” I trailed off, because the front door of the diner opened, and someone that I did not expect to be there in the slightest was, and she entered with the same casual grace that she always moved with.

“Speak of the devil,” I muttered, as Sonya entered the diner and headed straight for us.

All eyes turned to her.

She looked at me for a long moment, her lips pursed. Then she turned her full attention on the two other men. She didn’t say anything, and instead simply raised an eyebrow.

“You’re one of his other lackeys aren’t you?” Summer said.

“Gentlemen,” she said dismissively, like she shouldn’t have had to bother saying more.

“Oh, I wouldn’t call us that,” Fall said quietly. “We are certainly men, but ‘gentle’ is not really a descriptive word that describes, well, either of us,” he added, and slipped out of the booth.

Or at least he started to, before Sonya pulled her hand out of her jacket pocket. She was holding a small black pistol, and she aimed it very casually at Fall’s stomach.
