Chapter Twelve

Anna, Paco and I arrive at Tootsie’s Bridal Salon a few minutes before my eleven o’clock appointment. The crime scene tape is gone from the front door, which means sometime between seven thirty this morning and now, the police were here to remove it.

I wonder what else the police have been up to. Have they gotten any forensic evidence back? And why did Grace call Heidi and ask her to come down to the police station? And most importantly, how on earth did Clarice get a business card that was tacked to a bulletin board inside the employee workroom at The Harbor House? I make a mental note to ask Brittany about that.

My cell phone buzzes. It’s a text from Travis.

Just got back from fishing with Dad. What have you been up to?

I text back. Breakfast at Heidi’s with Anna and now a consult with Marlene about my wedding dress. Also hired someone new for the café.

Sounds like a productive morning.

He has no idea.

It sure has been!

See you later tonight? I can grab a pizza and we can watch a movie. Want me to see if Will and Brittany can join us?

Sure!

We make plans to meet at my place later, but I already know tonight isn’t going to be the relaxing evening Travis is probably hoping for. There’s no way I can keep everything I found out today to myself, and considering we just made a vow to always be truthful with one another, I’m going to have to come clean and tell Travis about swiping that business card from Clarice’s bag. I’m also going to have to tell him that Jake Gitty is on the case. I’m hoping he takes it well. Despite Jake’s oily exterior, Travis has a grudging respect for Jake’s PI skills. Besides, I’m counting on Will and Brittany to back me up.

Anna and Paco walk into the salon ahead of me. The last time I was in Tootsie’s was the night of the murder, and the place seemed grim and dark, but now it’s business as usual. The chandeliers glow with light, making the tiaras on the mannequins sparkle as Frank Sinatra croons “The Best Is Yet to Come” through the overhead speakers. It’s almost as if there hadn’t been a murder here at all.

Marlene nervously rushes to greet us. “Lucy! Thank you so much for coming in today. Can I offer you ladies some champagne?”

“Sure, why not?” I’m probably going to have to be tipsy to go through trying on another round of dresses.

“Actually, I’d prefer some water,” Anna says.

Paco trots up to Marlene and wags his tail. “I guess you’re looking for something too, huh?” she says to my little dog. “Well, you’re in luck, because I have something special just for you.” She goes to the back, then returns shortly with a tray holding a bottle of mineral water for Anna, a glass of champagne for me, and a rawhide dog bone for Paco.

Paco looks impressed. Thanks!

“It was sweet of you to remember Paco,” I say.
