Our spirits were dampened somewhat after that. A clock was ticking, counting downâin secondsâthe amount of time we had to find a solution to the murder, but we were at a standstill. Despite my hesitation and fears about pursuing these matters, I still wanted justice to prevail. Perhaps we'd just had beginner's luck previously. Not that anything had gone smoothly in two of those three cases either, but there'd at least been a list of suspects.
Yet because Julius Stanton had thought he was a dead man after the war, he had shut down almost every aspect of a normal life. He had associated with no one except his one friend and those who heard his music on the road as they went from one rural area to another to play for the people working in the fields.
Why would anyone want to kill a 'dead man' anyway? And why they take the risk of doing it at such a potentially exposed location? Gordon Rollins seemed to be a possibility, but wasn't that too obvious a solution? He was Julius' best and possibly only friend. The person who'd given him a reason to go on. His involvement seemed unlikely, didn't it? And what of the white men who'd grabbed Mrs. Stanton? Didn't that point the finger in a totally different direction?
Since the rest of our household wasn't burdened by our concerns, Tye happily occupied himself with Dai's new photographs after dinner, while Lien and Rosa bubbled with continuous excitement during the meal and afterward, making a list of ingredients that would be needed for the cakes they planned to make for our introduction to the rest of the Campbell clan the next day.
We turned in at the usual time, but it took me longer than usual to fall asleep. My previous questions galloped in circles in my head, going nowhere and keeping me awake. When my alarm clock went off in the morning, I felt as worn as when I'd turned in for the night. Dai wasn't up when I finally dragged myself out of my room to start breakfast, a clear sign she still hadn't come up with anything more than before.
Even Prince made a later-than-usual appearance, which spoke volumes all on its ownâour lack of progress and our growing frustration were intense enough that he was sensing them. When I took him outside to feed him breakfast, I noticed even the early Texas morning sky seemed to be under the weather; the sun was blotted out by heavy gray clouds and the faint tang of coming rain stained the air.
I stretched and tried to clear the cobwebs from my brain as Prince dived into his breakfast. I knew Tye and Lien would notice my bedraggled state if I didn't shake it off. So I was a bit taken aback when we came back inside, and Dai was sitting at the breakfast table in the kitchen.
"Took you two long enough."
Prince gave a joyful bark and hurried over to her, his curled tail wagging, his doggie nails clicking against the floor.
