CHAPTER ELEVEN
Gavin came around the house to the back patio, where Jonas and Daisy were sipping their mugs of coffee early the following morning. Daisy had made arrangements to go into work later. She and Jonas sat on the glider that Jonas had made for her, pushing slowly back and forth as they talked, watched Felix, and simply spent time in silence before they started their day. This meeting with Gavin had been planned. He was bringing over the plans for Jonasâs workshop. At least, they were tentative plans.
âLetâs go inside,â Daisy said to Gavin. âItâs already hot and humid out here, and itâs only eight oâclock. Imagine what noon will be like. I have iced tea inside if youâd rather have that instead of hot tea or coffee.â
âA glass of iced tea would be great. Iâve been making the rounds since six this morning.â Gavin carried a cardboard tube that Daisy knew contained the paper-rolled plans.
Jonas whistled to Felix and the golden retriever came running, glad to do his masterâs bidding. Once inside, Pepper wound around Daisyâs ankles.
âOh, no,â she told the tuxedo cat. âYou and your sister had breakfast with Felix. Itâs not treat time. This is grown-up time.â
Pepper sat at her water dish and looked up at Daisy with her head tilted as if to say, Youâre kidding, right?
Jonas nudged Daisyâs shoulder. âWeâre going to have a snack, arenât we? Didnât you make coffee cake for Gavin?â
âGavin probably didnât have breakfast.â
Gavin shrugged. âI hate to tell you, but I didâtwo doughnuts. Emily left for a babysitting gig this morning, and Ben was going over to his friendâs. Theyâre going to swim later. Emily sticks to her breakfast diet of yogurt, yogurt, and yogurt. Ben has his favorite cereal in the morning and nothing else. The doughnuts were left over from a job site yesterday, and I brought them home.â Gavin pointed his finger at Daisy. âDonât you tell me I have to feed the kids healthier foods. Thereâs fruit in the fridge for when they get home.â
âI wouldnât deign to dictate your meals. Emily will probably do that for you.â
âYes, she does. âFish twice a week, Dad. We have to have fish twice a week for omega-3 oilsâ.â
Daisy laughed as Gavin laid the roll on the counter. By that time, Jonas had washed his hands and pulled the pitcher of iced tea from the refrigerator.
âThis one is peach herbal,â Daisy said. âWould you like sugar?â
âNo, thanks. I just try to keep liquids going in all day on days like this.â He hesitated before he took the lid off the cardboard roll. âEmily said you talked to her.â
âI did.â Daisy had stored the coffee cake in a container on the counter. Now she brought it over to the island and removed the lid. While Jonas pulled glasses from the cupboard, she found plates and set them on the island. âDid Emily talk to you about what we discussed?â
âActually, she did. She approached me when Ben wasnât around. She said talking to you made her see life in my perspective.
