There are two things that men should never weary of, goodness and humility; we get none too much of them in this rough world among cold, proud people.

She picked up her cellphone again, breathless. “Jed was telling the truth. He was trying to help, Jamie. Connell—he really was trying to help.”

CHAPTER 19

“Never a good sign, he thought, when the crows showed up.”

~Justin Cronin

Thirty minutes after Pippin called Grey to tell him about the break-in and her theory about Connell Foley, he was at the inn; wood, hammer, and nails in hand. His arms were flecked with dried wood stain and a thin layer of wood dust covered his work clothes, remnants of whatever project he’d been working on. She leaned against the wall in her office watching him while he boarded up the window from the outside until the wood blocked him from view. In so many ways, he was Pippin’s other half. As kids, they’d created a special language that only they understood. Even though they did not use their secret language anymore, they still used their childhood nicknames for each other. Whenever she and Grey were in the same room together, a sense of calm settled over Pippin. Grey’s presence had that effect, even now when he was tense and worried because danger was, once again, darkening their doorway.

He came inside to secure it from that direction. “Peevie, you gotta be careful. If that coin is worth what we think it is, whoever wants it isn’t going to stop till they find it.”

“I’m going to open a safe deposit box at the bank,” she said. “It’s the only way to keep it from getting into the wrong hands.” The Burrow was the safest place in the house, but people knew about it. Some of the treasure hunters knew about it. It wouldn’t stay secret for long. She was surprised no one had broken into it yet given that Salty and Jimmy Gallagher both knew about it.

The thought that Camille might also know about it, courtesy of her incarcerated husband, crossed her mind. Could Camille have broken the office window in hopes of getting into The Burrow?

“I’ll go with you,” Grey said.

Pippin scurried back to her room. Up to The Burrow. She caught a glimpse of the crow on the windowsill outside. Hattie thought the black bird was a sign of good luck, but Pippin wasn’t so sure. It felt ominous the way it hung around, always turning up and stirring the anxiety living inside her. “Shoo!” She waved her hand at it, but it didn’t budge. It angled its head and looked directly at Pippin. For the first time, she noticed the blue tint to its eyes. She inched closer to get a better look, but the movement spooked the bird. As it opened its wings, Pippin thought she caught a glimpse of a single white feather. No. Impossible. She clamped her eyes shut for a second, then opened them again. The crow was gone.
