Considerably posher than the others just visited, Nicholas Post’s trailer was next on their list. A full-sized sofa ran along one side of the trailer, and Nicholas Post made a little effort to hide that he was resting on it when Rosa and Miguel knocked and entered.

“Ah, Miss Reed,” he said, pulling himself into a seated position, “I expected you, but the detective coming along is a surprise.”

“We’re both after the same thing, Mr. Post,” Rosa explained. “Finding the killer, and, of course, clearing your name.” She removed the paperwork from her purse, unfolded it, and laid it on the small table. “I have nothing to lose by working closely with the police, but if you’d rather not engage me, I’d understand.”

“Oh, don’t go jumping to conclusions, Miss Reed. I suspect you have means at your disposal that the police department doesn’t have. Rules and such.”

“I am not known for breaking the rules, Mr. Post.”

Mr. Post shot a look at Miguel and then back at Rosa. “Uh-huh.” Rosa didn’t like the conspiratorial inference in his tone. He then picked up the contract, read it rather quickly in Rosa’s estimation, then patting his pocket for a pen and finding one, signed his name with a flourish.

Rosa collected the papers and studied the signature. “Nikolai Postovik?”

Mr. Post lifted a shoulder. “Nicholas Post is a stage name. Everyone wants to sound English, don’t they, Miss Reed? It’s better for business.”

“I am English.”

“Well, bully for you.” He winked at her.

Rosa forced herself not to roll her eyes. For a grown man, Mr. Post’s behavior could be rather childish.

“Do you mind if Detective Belmonte and I ask a few questions?” Rosa said. “I guarantee that I intend to learn what I can to accomplish what you hired me to do.”

Mr. Post waved a hand. “I hope you don’t mind if I smoke.”

A well-used ashtray and a half-empty pack of cigarettes sat on the table. Mr. Post found a lighter and lit a cigarette.

“You’ve fired guns before?” Rosa asked. “In other films?”

Nicholas Post didn’t seem to want to answer this. Rosa sensed it was a point of ego more than anything, so she pushed a little harder. “Have you ever actually fired a gun in another film, Mr. Post?”

“Of course, I’ve fired a gun. Shooting is practically an American pastime. I suppose you have a different experience with the general public in England not having access to guns.”

“Most men in Britain have fired a gun before. We did have two wars, you know.” She sighed, “It’s a simple question, Mr. Post.” Why did he instinctively attack her? She was on his side.

“So, working with Dennis McCann wasn’t your first opportunity of dealing with a firearms’ expert on a movie set?” she pressed.

“No. I’d been through the rundown plenty of times. Nothing to learn from that upstart. The guy looks like he spends all day surfing, not studying up on weapons. I showed him I could shoot off six rounds of blanks, and we were done.”

“What did you think of Scott Huntington?” Miguel asked.
