CHAPTER 13

Max called Jason, but before she could tell him about her interview, he stopped her.

“Tell me all about it at your dad’s,” he said. “He’s making us dinner.”

Max sighed, feeling a little bit of the stress slip away. “I like being an ‘us.’”

“Me, too.” Jason’s smile came through in his voice. “See you there.”

Max went home first to change. Even though they were eating in, she wanted to look nice for her fiancé.

She put on a bright blue silk blouse and a simple knit skirt. A few swipes of mascara, lip gloss, and some dangly gold earrings, and she was ready.

Entering as usual through the back door, she found her dad stirring a pot on the stove. The kitchen smelled of onions and garlic.

She gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Smells wonderful. What are you making?”

He grinned. “You know I only have four recipes in my repertoire, and that includes pancakes and French toast.”

“That means you’re making lasagna or meatloaf, then. Guessing by the sauce you’re stirring, I’d say it’s lasagna.”

“You would be right. Want to help with the garlic bread?”

“Of course.”

Max took a seat at the kitchen table with a bowl, a stick of butter, garlic powder, and Parmesan cheese. She creamed the butter with a fork to soften it.

“How was your day?” Richard asked.

Max grimaced.

“That bad, huh?”

“Someone started a rumor that I pushed Heidi down the stairs.”

Richard’s mouth fell open. “Someone actually said that?”

“More than one person, apparently. When I go out, people are eyeballing me from across the room and whispering. I don’t know if they’re talking about me or if I’m starting to get paranoid.”

Richard set a loaf of French bread and a knife on a cutting board on the table. “No one who knows you would ever believe such a thing.”

“Not everyone in this town knows me, at least not personally, but almost everyone knows who I am. A rumor like this could ruin my business.”

“I’m sure it’s not that bad. Give it a few days and see if it blows over.” Richard layered lasagna noodles, meat sauce, and cheese in a glass casserole dish.

“I’m not sure if I can afford to wait. The police came by my shop. I thought they wanted more information about what I saw when I found Heidi unconscious in her shop, but it turned into an interrogation. I think they’ve heard the rumor too, or at least they know that Heidi and I weren’t on good terms before her death.” Max cut the bread into thick slices. She must have been doing it a little too forcefully because her father took the knife away from her.

“Why don’t I cut the bread,” he suggested. “Did they accuse you of something?”

“Not exactly. Let’s wait for Jason to get here before I go into that story.”

After Max had mushed the butter into a glob of garlicky goodness, she spread it onto the bread and set the slices on a cookie sheet.

Richard took the bubbling lasagna out of the oven and set the dish on a trivet on the dining room table.
