The wedding guests took their leave after tea, including Matt’s aunt Euphemia. Rupert had given the staff the evening off to celebrate the wedding, having arranged for a cold collation to be served in the dining room at eight.

By mutual agreement everyone retired for a few hours to rest and change, before returning to the drawing room later to continue the festivities. As she wrote a note to her grandmother full of the wedding details, Kitty felt quite exhausted. The meeting with Aunt Euphemia had resembled a job interview and since Matt hadn’t advertised a vacancy for a new Mrs Bryant, she couldn’t help feeling it was all a little premature.

Alice had also returned to their room to change from her uniform into her best light-pink print dress.

‘There’s to be music, miss, and a nice spread. Lord Medford has sent champagne downstairs for us too and we’re to all have a bit of cake.’ Alice was beside herself with glee at the idea of a proper party.

‘Lucy has given me a gift for you. She wanted to thank you for all your help this morning and with assisting the house staff to prepare for the wedding.’ Kitty presented Alice with the small package wrapped in layers of tissue paper.

‘Oh, that’s very kind of Miss Lucy. She looked so lovely in her gown, like an angel in that veil. She didn’t need to give me anything. It was an honour to be asked to help her dress.’ Alice’s face flushed with pleasure as she carefully unwrapped the layers.

Kitty watched as her maid opened the small box contained within the papers. ‘That is lovely, Alice. What a nice thing.’

It was a small, beautifully engraved silver-plated photograph frame in the modern style. ‘It’s smashing.’ Alice was clearly delighted by Lucy’s thoughtfulness. ‘It’s been a lovely day.’

‘Yes it has. I survived meeting Matt’s aunt Euphemia, and, best of all, Inspector Lewis has made an arrest for Mr Evans’ murder. Some man staying at the Plume of Feathers in the village. Apparently, they found the gun hidden in his room.’

‘That is good news, miss. I reckon as the staff will be glad to see the back of that constable and all. He’s been eating them out of biscuits in the kitchen.’ Alice put away her present and came to assist Kitty with the tiny satin covered buttons on the side of her bridesmaid’s gown.

Kitty stepped out of her dress as the satin puddled around her feet. ‘Now we can put our glad rags on and have some fun.’ She beamed at her friend.

‘About time too, miss. It’ll be nice to be doing something without any shenanigans overshadowing it all.’ Alice slipped Kitty’s new pale-green gown from its hanger.

Once dressed for the evening the two girls left the room together. Alice to take the back stairs down to the servants’ hall where the party was to occur for the staff, and Kitty to head for the drawing room.

Hattie and Ralston were the first to arrive downstairs, where Ralston was engaged in demonstrating the art of cocktail making to an admiring Hattie.
