Chapter Fifteen

The weather had held up, and Avery and Tiffany enjoyed a glass of merlot on the patio as they waited for the sun to set. Out on the lawn, Sprinkles happily chased butterflies and bugs as they headed to their safe spaces before dark.

It was Avery’s favorite time of the day. Sprinkles was playing, and the work day had come to an end. The vineyard was quieting down, and the world around them seemed to be settling.

It was a beautiful autumn evening, and Avery was happy to spend it with her friend. Tiffany had been working harder than ever, and she hadn’t had the chance to see her as often as she usually did. So, she was eager to catch up with her.

“How’s work been?” Avery asked.

Avery was tired and happy for the distraction from all of her work and from the case at hand. It felt to her as if every minute of her day was either going into the vineyard or spent in the viewing room of the police station.

It was nice to sit for a while and enjoy some good company. And the wine seemed to pair perfectly with the weather.

“Work has been so dull lately,” Tiffany said. “I mean, I’m working harder than ever. We’re massively understaffed. It just feels like the same thing every day.”

“You’re a tax consultant,” Avery laughed. “What do you expect?”

“I dunno,” Tiffany shrugged. “Your life seems so exciting. You’re building ponds and following criminal cases. I just stare at numbers all day and do more filing than any sane human should ever have to do. And what’s worse, it seems we’re losing clients. That’s never a good sign.”

“You never know, maybe you’ll find some tax fraud soon while doing your work, and you’ll get to enjoy a criminal case too!” Avery teased.

“That’s not funny,” Tiffany said. But she laughed anyway.

“You do not want more excitement,” Avery said. “Take it from me. I’m exhausted. I’m just happy to be sitting for a while. I wouldn’t mind a couple of dull days.”

“I’ll swap with you,” Tiffany joked.

Avery sighed and took another sip, enjoying every aspect of the flavor. This particular merlot was easy drinking. Sprinkles had rolled over the lawn, creating green streaks on his light fur. But he seemed happy enough.

“I tell you, one of the most terrifying moments of my life was when I realized that the police thought I was a suspect in the murder,” Avery said. “I don’t envy the people who are currently still suspected of this murder.”

“Did they treat you like one?” Tiffany asked. “I mean…like was Chief Mathers all strict and scary and stuff?”

“He had to be,” Avery said. “He treated me like he treats every other murder suspect, I suppose. It’s not a good feeling. I keep thinking how scary it must be for the actual murderer to be there.”

“I suppose if you’re brave enough to commit murder, then Chief Mathers isn’t so scary,” Tiffany said casually.

“Do you think bravery is required to commit murder?” Avery asked.
